Anyone have any tips for sticking to a healthy eating/exercise plan when working night shift?

Plan your meals ahead of time. I don't even bring money with me to work to eliminate the capability of ordering food when everyone else does.

I guess it depends on the facilities you have available. Low calorie snacks such as cucumber, carrot and celery sticks with cherry tomatoes or fruit are great if you have the problem of getting peckish through the night or if you pick because you are bored and on your own.

If you have a microwave available and are having your main meal at work try making your own food such as chilli or Bolognaise with extra low fat mince and loads of veg, remember to pack rice or pasta separate or it absorbs the sauce and doesn't have a great texture.

Depending on what your job is you might be able to get in some extra exercise at work. When hubby works nights he volunteers to do all the patrols which gives him four lots of half hour walks each night. We also change our gym schedule depending on his shift so we either do an hour as soon as he gets in if he's on days or once he gets up if he's on nights. He works 12 hour shifts 5 til 5 so he usually gets up at 9 am then goes back to bed about 1:30 for a nap before work if he's on nights.

Something not many people think about is black out blinds for while you are sleeping during the day, ear plugs can also be useful in getting a good days sleep depending on your neighbours.

You may also want to think about vitamin tablets as you may not be getting enough sunlight for your vitamin D intake, either that or get one of the lamps people who suffer from SAD sometimes use.

good luck with the night shifts and hopefully you'll get lots of suggestions.
