I have been doing this on and off for a while, and I am a bit paranoid about eating to little. I am at about 1000 cal for today should i push myself to 1200 cal if I'm not hungry?

You only have six pounds to lose?

Open your diary. If you're not hungry it's possible you're actually eating 1,200+ from inaccuracies. how much are you losing per week? How long are you eating 1000 calories? Multiple days? Weeks?

One day of 1,000 calories won't matter.

How tall are you? 1200 is a generalized minimum but that's for an average-sized female like 5'5. If you're more petite, you should be okay. Just worry about your protein and carbs and fat and make sure you're eating nutritiously dense foods.

Hunger isn't the best indicator ... you can be hungry when you've had enough to eat, or not hungry when you haven't. And sometimes when we undereat severely, appetite goes down.

But if you're JUST getting back on track, you may find your appetite kicks back up shortly, in which case, problem solved.

And no, 1000 calories is not okay for someone 5 foot 4 to be eating on a regular basis. The odd day, sure -- but your average should be higher. And if you exercise, eat more.

And don't do anything drastic like try to cut out fat. We need a healthy amount of fat, so don't suddenly switch to no oil, no-fat, etc. Fat will also help boost calories without you feeling like you had to eat another meal to get there, because it's calorie dense.

@futuremanda thank you! That helps me, there's still room in my day so I'm sure I'll know later if I need to make changes to my meal plan.

At your height you likely need more then 1000 calories per day on average. Eating only 1000 occasionally isn't a problem, but eating that low every day could be.

How did you become overweight if you are not hungry eating only 1000 calories? How much fat are you eating?

@Need2Exerc1se I have a very sedentary lifestyle, and I have been eating fast food and soda too much. When I make my food i don't eat that much, but when I eat out i over eat.

I'm having the same issue. I average at around 1000 a day. I have to push myself to eat 1,200. Not only am I not hungry but the thought of eating makes me feel sick. I find eating more frequently helps.

Sounds like a choice of doing both for balance.

Cutting fast food and soda is a good thing IMO, but you can still cook your meals with calorie dense foods to make sure you get enough calories (and nutrients!). Do you cook with fat? Include nuts, seeds, avocado, and other naturally fatty foods in your diet? Do you include higher calorie vegetables like sweet potatoes and legumes in your diet?

@Need2Exerc1se I don't really cook much any more sadly, both because of my living situation, I have minimal storage space, and skill level. What i have been doing is things like getting a whole chicken from the market shredding it and having that for work lunches with veggies. Then having things through out the day like hard boiled eggs, nuts, fruit. Any suggestions along that line would also be appreciated.

Are you eating grain free? A chicken sandwich or wrap would add calories for lunch. Or make the chicken and veggies into a salad with an olive oil based dressing. Add some yogurt or cheese with your fruit and nuts. Hummus and crackers. Apples and peanut butter. Things like that will drive your calories up pretty quick without cooking.

Not grain free, but I am watching the carbs. Thank you for all the suggestions!

Those actually sound like really good ways to manage your limitations of living situation and skill level :)
