Why are so many of the examples to choose from have to be a store bought item or from a restaurant? Everyone knows It is better homemade for calorie counting and usually fat and sugar content.

Because life generally involves eating out or eating convenience foods at some point.
There are plenty of foods to suit everyone's needs in the database. You can build your own recipes and eat everything entirely from scratch if you want to. If you see that something is missing from the database, find it on the USDA website or http://nutritiondata.self.com/ and create it under "My Foods".0 -

Because people eat that stuff and they want to log it?
The number of entries is irrelevant; it just relates to the variety. There are tonnes of burger joints and only one "home", so obviously restaurant burgers (for example) will outnumber homemade.
You might also want to spend a bit of time here before you start judging other people's food choices. You'd be surprised how many MFP members have had triple digit weight losses while eating all that terrible fat and sugar.0 -

Wait, are you talking in the food database? Presumably, people who cook from scratch don't make their entries publicly available because they weren't raised in the jungle. Sorting through *Homemade entries makes me sad.0 -

1. I don't like to cook.
2. I wouldn't be able to stick to an eating plan that didn't include the foods that I like to eat.
3. Even if I could manage to stick to a total shift like that, I would feel deprived and revert to my favorite foods after I got to my goal weight. I would then gain all the weight back plus some.
I want to lose weight and keep it off. That means that I'm going to be eating a lot of pre-prepared food. MyFitnessPal would be useless to me if I couldn't track the foods that I actually eat.

Also, if you're eating in a restaurant, the food will often have more calories than homemade. I don't use anywhere near that much butter or olive oil at home--but that's why eating out is such a pleasure, right?0

what do you mean by so many of the examples to choose from...do you mean stuff in the data base? There's just as many whole food items in the data base as there are things from restaurants and packaged goods. People eat at restaurants...people eat pre-packaged foods..people eat whole foods and prepare meals from scratch...why shouldn't everyone be able to find what they need in the data base?
also, if you're looking for "homemade" meals in the database, don't...use the recipe builder or enter your food items individually.0 -

STORE BOUGHT...that would include most things that people consume unless you grow it yourself. Vegetables, fruit, meats all come from the store.
There are many restaurants that offer products that will fit in to most peoples eating plan. The only trouble that I have eating out is the sodium levels in most restaurant food. I don't eat out often so I don't let that deter me from dining out.
We all want to get fit and healthy...not live in fear of restaurant food or prepackaged items.
Some of that prepackaged food is pretty good on occasion!

I've been craving fajitas. I make good fajitas, very low-calorie, but they ain't what I'm hankering for right now.

On the days that I do "huge" grocery shopping I always either eat out or buy some of that evil prepackaged stuff. It is a reward for being brave enough to battle the grocery store mob.

I'm actually glad MFP has so many options for restaurant menu items in the database, because I like to dine out with the hubby about once a month. It allows me to plan ahead and shift around my calories throughout the rest of the day.

Being able to find more restaurant information here was the reason I switched from a different calorie counting site.
But I'm not sure I get the OP's point. There are a ton of non-restaurant foods in the database. You may have to search for the individual components (which you should do anyway, since it's more accurate) and sometimes it takes a little trial and error to call up the entries you want (try adding raw, cooked, or usda to your search terms) but they are all there.

I think some people think when they come to a calorie counting site that we will all be eating baked chicken and steamed broccoli.
I hated steamed broccoli...or any vegetable just steamed. I will go for roasted in olive oil any day. Maybe throw on a little cheese to make it look good.0 -
