How do I decide my activity level?

Hi all,
I just set my profile and I wasn't sure how to set my activity level. I am a pet sitter and I walk dogs for sometimes 2-3 hours a day. Granted I am not walking that fast but it varies. I don't know if it is better to set my activity level as high or just normal and add the walking as it changes daily. It added an extra 500 calories to my calorie intact today and I am concerned that is too many calories but obviously I don't know or I wouldn't be in this situation to start with. Thanks in advance for your help.

Probably lightly active or active, to start. See how you do in a month or so. The worst that happens if you underestimate by a bit is you may be more hungry and lose a bit faster than you expected. If you overestimate by a bit, you may lose a bit more slowly than expected (but you also got to eat more, and maybe felt better). But either way, you'll know in a few weeks.

Personally, I'd go with whatever gave me enough energy to actually do the dog walks. You could try active, and just not eat all the calories on days you feel less hungry?

Or you could snag something like a Fitbit or Jawbone if you're interested in that.

Thanks. Any opinion on the accuracy of the fitbit?

The majority of people are sedentary or lightly active in my experience. If your activity level does not fall in line with the scale's downward movement then you are either overestimating your activity level or underestimating your calories.

Well I picked light activity but for example today I took 3 hours worth of dog walks and 30 minutes on the treadmill. I am fairly certain that isn't sedentary. I was just wondering if it would be more accurate just to add my walks as exercise or say I am active. I know exactly how long I walk but I don't know the speed. I think I may just get a fitbit so I can tell for sure.

I think that if you log it as exercise, you'd get a higher calorie estimate. So logging it as lifestyle might be safer no matter which way you go. Although you could play with the settings to see the calorie differences that you get between lightly active and active, and then go into exercise and play with a few estimates in the database for walking, to compare.

I think a lot of people find the step trackers pretty accurate for assessing daily activity. There's also a really active and very helpful group, that I don't have the link for, but you could pop in and ask or lurk.

And I agree that you are NOT sedentary!

Thanks. I may play around with the settings. I just really want to start losing so I want to do it right! I have a lot of trouble losing weight. I think logging my food will really help. I don't feel like I eat that much but I keep gaining weight so I must be eating way too much.

Learn to log everything you eat & drink accurately & honestly. Logging works.

Thanks. I am. I know it is the only way. I have to do this for me.
