Guy tried to out duel me in bench off

So I was at the gym doing flat bench press, doing 295 lb paused doubles for 5 sets. I finish my first set and I see this dude take the bench right next to mine. Didn't think much of it at first. He puts on 135, reps it. Puts on 225, reps it. Then he goes onto 275 lbs and does it for a single! At this point, I know it's on. I finish my 2nd set and look over as he slaps on 35ers for a 295 press equaling mine. Intrigued, I act as though I'm shuffling through my phone all the while watching his attempt from the corner of my eye. He barely eeks out the press but I am impressed nonetheless. Now, I'm thinking to myself, "there is no way this dude is going to go higher." Then comes the bombshell. He takes off the 35's and proceeds to put the 45's on for an impressive 3 plates! Now, the first thing that came to my mind was, "why doesn't he just add 10's in addition to the previous 35 instead of going through the hassle of removing and adding weight?" But I digress... He goes to the drinking fountain and as he's coming back, I feel like this is the perfect time to strike up a conversation with the dude. Normally, I do not like talking to random people but this guy had a legit bench: Powerlifting setup, slow and controlled negative, *kitten* firmly planted on the bench, and a soft tap and go. The type of press where any lifting bro would firmly nod in approval. I ask, "Do you want a spot on your next attempt, man?" He kinda shakes his head and says, "No, but a watchful eye would be good." I think to myself, "that's a bad idea..." but whatever. At this point, we're shooting the breeze. I'm talking him up, telling him he has an impressive looking bench and yak yak yak. He goes onto telling me how he didn't think I could lift 295 and blah blah blah (I didn't take offense to this because I really don't look like I can bench much. I wear an oversized t-shirt and my arms are 14.5 inches). Anyhow, the time finally comes for him to bench 315. I'm sitting on my bench with a "watchful eye" and of course he inevitably fails miserably on his 315 attempt. The bar is stuck on his upper chest. I get up from my bench and upright row the chit out of the bar just in time before he could kill himself. He just lays there motionless on the bench, arms covering his face. Not a single thank you, in fact, not a single word uttered. I go onto my bench to do my next set. As he's cleaning up, I make sure to do an extra long pause rep just so he knows who the man is. He walks away.
