Hi all,
I've just started to swim as a regular exercise as I injured my foot with a stress fracture or heel spur (not sure which yet).
I have been doing 5 laps 3x/week in the pool since I'm just starting out, but they aren't one right after another.
I do a lap, take 30-60 seconds to recover, then start the next lap. I was thinking I'd add an extra lap each week, but I don't know if this is too slow or if the recovery time is too much or too little.
When I reached 10 laps, I was planning on slowly linking the laps together until I can do 10 laps without stopping.

My first week I'd get lightheaded, now I feel really good and I love it a lot, I just want to make sure I'm doing it all properly. If you know of resources I can check out or have personal experience in this area, please reply with your thoughts! :)

I started a couple of months ago swimming for similar reasons, recovery from an injury preventing me from running much. I started with this program here and I am surprised at how fast I progressed : https://speedo.com.au/speedo-fit/swim-programs/starter25

I've been swimming for years 5 times a week and it's definitely my passion. I use swimming calories to eat more so depending on what I'm eating on a certain day determines how long I swim for. Usually I do 45 minutes in the week and up to 75 minutes on a weekend. I also throw 30 minutes cardio in the mix on a weekend so I can eat more. I think adding a lap each week for you is good, you don't want to over-do it. That said, swimming is a fabulous form of exercise for any injury as it doesn't put pressure on limbs/joints x

That sounds like a good start. Once you link the ten laps together, keep going!

I swim laps 3x a week and like you I had to take breaks ...and still take small ones. I can swim back & forth now and then take 20 seconds before I set off again. I don't worry so much about how many laps I do. I commit to 45 min and do as much as I can. If you start to feel cold between laps then you're waiting too long.

It's been about 10 months now of swimming & I just love it! Feel free to message me if you want more details or anything :) take care!

I love swimming too. I go twice a week for an hour each time and about 54-60 lengths ( 27-30 laps?). I try to best myself each week for fun. My natural stroke was crawl but I taught myself breaststroke as i heard it gives a better muscle work out. I take small breaks at each end on occasion to catch my breath or because somone is swimming in my way.

Been swimming for 20 yrs. It's best to do things gradually and keep pushing yourself. You might want to think about bicycling with your legs, while catching your breath. This keeps you moving and burns a few extra calories until you can increase the number of laps. You are doing it right, in my opinion. Best. B)
