Have been borderline obese for 15 years, overweight for even longer. I want to take better care of myself, because I have grandchildren now. Pounds don't fall off like they used to after the holidays. Suggestions?

Hi, I'm Julie from California . I am so disappointed. I have been following my plan for a week, and gained back...even eating like the fitness pal suggests. I should be happy that I am not gaining consistently I guess. I am a grandma too....we need to keep up with our grand Babies!

If you had no metabolism you would be dead. ;)

Read the link above, lots of good information.

    Good luck. :)

ETA: Just checked your age you are 44 yrs old, you are not old. I am 46 yrs old and had lost 121 pounds, you can do this. :)

err no and just read the link provided. Understand how weight loss works and improve your understanding.

A week is not enough time, but you need to lose weight over a period of time and as weight loss is not linear, then its impprtant to learn how to be patient.

    Agreed. Just eat less food.

I'm 44 this year and lost 50+ pounds by doing the same thing. There's no such thing as "no metabolism" unless you're dead.

There is this myth that you just can't lose weight because you're older or disabled or xyz. It may not be as EASY, but you CAN do it! Age is a secondary factor as you tend to slow down, not move as much, lose muscle mass, have arthritis or other health problems that make exercise and diet harder, but it is never impossible and it is rarely out of your control. You CAN lose weight. You have to give it a lot of time - you won't drop 20 lbs in a week by just entering your food every day (not that that's healthy anyway...). You have to be accurate with your logging, you must be patient, and you must have realistic expectations. I have lost nearly 40 lbs by diet alone. Yes, I've worked out, but I've been on bedrest for the last 2 weeks, and unable to work out for a few weeks before that. I still managed to lose a couple lbs by eating at maintenance most days, and slightly under others.
You CAN do this. Be patient and remember you'll get out of it the effort you put in.

Guys, I realize I can lose weight, only noting that it's more difficult to do so.

Oddly, as popular as sarcasm can be here, hyperbole gets frowned upon. Plus, there are tons (oh shoot, now someone will ask if I weight it with a food scale) of people that say things like no metabolism and mean they literally think they've broken the laws of physics with their calorie levels, exercise and results - then they get mad about the ways they might have made errors being pointed out.

@imgrammyrose 10 years older than you and have dropped about 131 lbs simply by making huge life changes (nope no surgery). It's the attitude we have not the age or circumstances that get us where we wanna/need to be. :)

YOU CAN DO THIS! Don't feel you can't right out of the starting gate. Check out the Success thread and keeping reading and watching the progress made over there. It'll change your attitude for sure.

CaliforniaGirl is a great example of how a life over 50 can change and make you look like a completely different person. She's now a fitness model. Check out her blogs. You can also do a search for anyone by age and weight on this site.... sometimes it helps to add ppl similar in age and goals.

    Welcome!
