Patella tendinitis :-(

Hi there. I've been diagnosed with patella tendinitis. I'm not massively overweight but feel as though the extra pounds are not helping my knee. I used to attend a gym twice a week but had to quit due to a shoulder injury. Plus the impact on my knee is so bad I have had to stop doing a lot of the exercises I used to do. Can anyone offer advice on how I can still exercise without too much strain on my knee (and please don't say swimming - I hate the water! Lol). Thanks

    See a physical therapist.

You have a shoulder injury and a knee problem. Swimming is the only thing someone here would suggest, easiest thing on the joints

    Hi
Going to sound daft but try yoga and Pilates, I have had a few injuries and was only allowed to do gentle exercise, it's good as u can build strength.
    Hope this helps

You could see whether biking outside or at the gym (probably on lower resistance) doesn't hurt. Maybe the elliptical, although if your runner's knee is bad enough the elliptical will probably also hurt. Also, what about simple walking? That's sometimes the best and most effective exercise there is (assuming you can do it pain-free still).

In the meantime, work on strengthening your hips and glutes and increasing their flexibility. For me that's always been the key to beating knee problems including patellar tendinitis. I do these every other day:

Thanks for all you suggestions. I'm due to start physio on 13/7 so hopefully that will help. I do a lot of walking and my job requires me to be on my feet. Unfortunately I'm not pain free with it. Had X-ray and MRI but they can't actually find what's causing the pain :(
