Scales that measure to the pound - 500 pounds+

Hello I recently purchased my weigh xl 550 scales from amazon but they keep giving me wrong readings, there's no way I lost 40-50 pounds in a week. Does anyone know a scale that goes up to 500 pounds and reads to the pound instead of 0.2? I also have trouble balancing due to my weight which could affect it.

    Been after these myself for my partner. I don't know of any but I know some pharmacies, clinics and GPs will weigh people on their scales as part of the weight management service. It varies from region to region so you'd need to ask around your area.

    Can you set it to read in stones and lbs - that often loses the decimal place.

    This one measures in 0.5 kg (about a pound) steps above 250 lbs.

    It will definitely be a balancing issue. If I don't place my feet in the same place and centre my weight over the scales my readings also vary.

    If you are big and in the UK the NHS will help you with your weightloss including weighing you. Contact your GP and ask them to refer you to a specialist if possible or they can help you as well.

    In addition, the heavier you are, the easier it is to lose weight with caloric restriction alone.

    If you are over 400lbs, you can simply log every single thing you eat. Cut back your calories by 200 per day each week until you reach 1,800 calories. At that point, you'll be dropping over 2lbs a week with nothing else. If you're weighing all your food and logging everything, you'll be able to get your weight checked once a week or even once a month, and you'll see a big difference.

    You have food issues, obviously. The WRONG way to go about this is to freak out about whether every single thing is the "right" thing or not. Don't. If you want to eat the ideal diet or whatever you have in your head, you'll have time for that once your weight is down. Right now, your health would improve if you drank Coke and ate Twinkies for a total of 1800 calories a day. (Er...don't do that because you'll be hungry. But right now, that's the biggest reason not to--eat stuff that will fill you up on 1800 calories!)

    Start walking to preserve muscle mass. Do a five minute walk (2 min out, 3 back) every day for a week. Then do a 7 min walk. Then a 10 min walk. Add 5 min a day until you're walking 30 minutes a day, at least. An hour will be better. But 30 min is AWESOME.

    When you hit 350lbs, you can start lifting weights. That will do more to build healthy, lean muscle and burn more fat.

    Hey thanks for the info, my issue atm is getting my accurate weight, I think I'm going to do as myfelinepal said and get weighed at the doctors. Once I have accurate weight, I will start a thread where I update every so often.

    (I'm sorry, I'm sure you've thought of this but - are the batteries ok in your scales? Mine goes nuts when the batteries get low and if you're still using ones that came with it they're often cheap rubbish. If it's weighing wildly differently and you're not on an uneven floor and it's not the batteries, I'd complain and send it back. I know it doesn't solve your weighing problem but it sounds faulty and you shouldn't have to pay if it doesn't work).

    You don't have to have your weight to lose. :) It helps, but it's not required! I didn't own or use a scale when I lost the weight from my first pregnancy. So until you can get to the Dr's...start logging!

    Depending on what kind of diet you switched from - high in sodium, etc, you very well could have lost a lot of weight, possibly a lot of water weight. I suppose I don't understand why a scale that measures to the on would be more accurate than a 0.2 one? That seems counterintuitive to me. My digital scale also used to give rubbish readings then I discovered that per the instructions, anytime I moved it I was supposed to calibrate the scale by stepping on with one foot only, wait till all the lights go out, then step on again. If you have balancing issues where you can't stay still though, then I fully understand why the scale could not give an accurate reading

    Good plan, follow MFP :smile: I'm not sure why that user focused on 1800 calories, but that's what I eat now to lose weight (as a 240 pound female). When I was at my highest, 340, I was eating like 2300 to lose weight, so don't be afraid to follow what MFP says.

    GP is a good idea and maybe just the practice nurse as they have better scales and will like to keep an eye/ assist with your weight loss. Good luk, dont be too daunted and you cna lose quite a lot at the beginning and still eat a decent amount.

    Uk here. At my heaviest i couldnt find scales to weigh me. My gp was happy to have the receptionist weigh me at lunch time between clinics. I was then referred to weigh ahead, they had sit on scales for those who couldnt stand steady. They also had dietitians and physios

    I had a two day physical at a hospital and they didn't have a scale that registered over 350 lbs. I had to weigh myself on a freight scale at work. I had gotten so heavy I didn't want to weigh myself. I have since righted that sinking ship and am moving in the right direction but still remember the scale challenge. As a previous poster noted eat right and the scales are not important.

    Oh, BTW, on weight differences...at 150lbs, I could change weight by up to 4lbs in a DAY. Just water weight. And water weight affects mostly fat and blood volume, so that was really just a part of me responsible for that. If you weigh more than 400lbs, I can see a 20lb shift between days happening very easily.

    If you were extremely inactive and particularly swollen and became more active, that could be even higher.

    To stand on a scale and get an accurate reading, you shouldn't be leaning. So if you can't see your feet, you will have to start it, step onto it by feel standing as straight and even as possible, guess when it's finished bouncing around, and step off. Leaning changes the answer by up to 5%.

    If you weigh yourself three times and get the same weight (within a small amount--for me, I can have a pound off with the highest from the lowest, but usually the rest are grouped more tightly--scaling up, I'd say 5lbs would be expected), then you can say it's right.

    At 500lbs+ I wouldn't worry too much about an accurate reading as you should be losing more than 2lbs a week. At that weight I would guess that you are over 50% bodyfat so can easily lose 5lbs a week until you are into the 30's.
