It is healthy. As long as you are eating the right amount of calories back. If you are on a 1200 cal diet and burn 700 on an elliptical, I think it may or may not work depending on the type of body you have.0

The 700 cal number on the elliptical machine is more than likely overstated.
Either way, if you are trying to lose weight, be sure to track how much you are eating. That is the surest way to get to your goals. Log your calorie burns from exercise, but only eat back about 50%, so you maintain a reasonable deficit.0 -
Have you ever seen the Viagra commercials where they say "use only if you are healthy enough to have sex"?
The same applies to any exercise program. Eliptical, or running, or cycling, etcetera. If you have been living a sedentary and overweight lifestyle and have any health issues that come from that, then discuss it with your doctor before jumping into strenuous exercise. Maybe long walks are better/safer for you.
Of course, if you're an Olympic swimmer and you decide to do some cardio on a machine...you probably have nothing to worry about.0 -

I would be very wary of that number, especially if you are below the 150-pound default and haven't put your own information into it. You are probably not achieving that burn level unless you are already in shape, in which case you wouldn't have asked this question. (Believe me--when you are on the elliptical a few months down the road and you think about your performance now, you will know what I mean.)
I think you should eat back at least 50% of that figure, adjusting higher if you start to lose weight too quickly.0 -
The question for me is why does a 19 year old with very little to lose spends more than 1 hour on the elliptical? It sounds so insanely boring, that I cannot imagine why you would be doing this when there are so many alternatives, especially at such a young age.0

I doubt very much you are acheiving that kind of burn .. what are you measuring it with
Take 50-75% of the calories until you have 8 weeks logging and then reassess0
