Are these foods bad in larger amounts? (Avocado, dates, nuts, peanut butter) Is it always about calories or more about content?

For weight management - balance of calories.
For physical health - balance of nutrients.
For mental health - balance of flavors, colors, texture and temperature.

For weight loss or maintenance, it's all about calories. If you weigh and log your portions carefully and stay within your calorie goal, you can eat whatever you want.

A little of both; you can include the above in your eating plan, just don't go overboard. They are all healthy foods and much better for you than eating fake stuff for the sake of calories. Unless the item is naturally "non-fat" stay clear of any thing labeled "non-fat." It is usually loaded w/sugar and chemicals that you don't want to be eating.

Yes. Eat more of them. They are fine in larger amounts. :star::star::star:

They are all good for you but in moderation. Like I try and draw the line at 1lb of pistachios.

There are certainly bad foods... A white bagel, sugary cereal -- that are, quite literally, never worth eating if you are interested in health and fitness.

If you're still hungry -- enjoy another handful of peanuts or nuts -- they are great for satiety and these high-caloric foods will keep you healthy. It's not just about weight loss!

    I'm in now.

Please tell me how a white bagel is unhealthy.

Absolutely incorrect. I am very much into health & fitness, and am currently maintaining a 100+ lb weight loss while building lean muscle mass and I include items like this in my balanced diet with absolutely no detrimental effects to my health.

OP, the foods you mentioned, as well as any other food, would not be good in excess - but the "larger amount" part is up to you if that's how you want to fit them in your balanced diet.

High carb, calorie, glycemic index while offering no protein, fiber, or nutrients. Obviously not great for weight loss... There are way better breakfast options.

That doesn't make it a healthy or even neutral food just because an active person maintaining a healthy, balanced diet can work it in without ill effect. Most Americans eat a ton of white, processed breads with every meal -- not just as a treat -- and it's no better for you than a glazed donut. Replacing these with whole grains is tastier and healthier in every case!

So yeah, arguing that there are no "bad" foods is just irresponsible.

Wait, are you talking about standard American diet or diet of active person? Because now you've brought up both. The food is actually the same in both, it's all about how the food is used. It's not irresponsible to say there aren't bad foods, it puts the *responsibility* on the user, not an inanimate object.

With ed and orthorexia and the emotional issues brought on with disordered eating issues, it's actually more irresponsible to push the good/bad food mantras. JMO, since I dealt (deal) with that.

    That's fair.

Though I still would argue that sugar cereal is really never worth eating (for both taste reasons and the high-sugar content / poor nutritional value). Objectively, some foods are just garbage and don't make any sense in the human diet. A white bagel for a lot of the same reasons (boring, bleached flour, is basically just calories for the sake of calories).

This is not about retraining the human palate to appreciate real food, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables. We can and should place value on the quality of a food item and the ingredients used.

Of course, I would never want someone to develop an unhealthy relationship with food, or one that is guilt-ridden and obsessive.

Taste reasons are purely subjective. I'm sure I could find a classroom of 3rd graders who would emphatically disagree.

Poor nutritional value? Most cereals - even sugary ones - are vitamin fortified. They have carbs, which (unless you're restricting them) people want/need in their diet.

Name one. I bet no matter what food you name, I can find a way to fit it into a perfectly healthy diet.
A white bagel for a lot of the same reasons (boring, bleached flour, is basically just calories for the sake of calories).

Nope...has carbs, some protein. Is a useful mechanism to carry some cream cheese (fats, etc). All necessary macro-nutrients.

I'll agree, as long as your definition of "quality" includes some reference to the fact that some foods (in moderation of course) simply taste good and are useful for mental health.

calories aren't evil...they are just a unit of energy...calories have nothing to do with nutritional density. An avocado is packed with awesome nutrition...and it's calorie dense...it's only "bad" if you eat so much that you overshoot your calorie targets.

First of all i was talking about weight loss. If you read my post well
Second when you hit your calorie allowance and your macro's and micro's than you have feed your body its needs isn't it?

I am a defender of a balanced daily calorie intake.... that means that next to my cooking from scratch and my own home grown vegetables and fruit, i eat also pizza and a white bagel!
Every Month i get my lab stats and they are excellent! I am as healthy as can be. I agree that you can make wise choices. But for sure that there are no bad and good foods There is only too much food! For medical reasons or others. When you have a gluten problem or any other allergic reaction to food, when you are a diabetic etc. yes than you have foods you cant have or must eat less of. That doesn't mean those foods are bad for somebody else. My bet is that you eat salt. I am salt less...i am not saying to you salt is bad because i cant have it and it will kill me. Totally rubbish.
People like to generalize to much. What is bad for me is bad for you.

Fitness wise you needs are different...but that still doesn't mean that certain foods are bad....your needs are different that's all.
