I've been craving all these weird foods since I started dieting and training..... I crave chocolate all the time ( I don't even like chocolate). Is there an explanation or a healthy substitution for sweets like chocolate and candy?

You may be craving chocolate due to a magnesium deficiency.

What your choccy cravings are trying to tell you

While we all get peckish, there’s a difference between feeling hungry and having a sudden urge for a specific food. In fact, intense food cravings can be a sign you’re deficient in certain nutrients.

    ...YOU CRAVE: CHOCOLATE

WHAT IT MEANS: Chocolate is rich in magnesium, so strong cravings could indicate a deficiency in a mineral vital for your skin and hair.

What’s more, levels of the mineral drop during the second half of your menstrual cycle, suggesting a possible link with many of the symptoms of PMS.

‘Drinking too much alcohol, tea, coffee and fizzy drinks can also deplete levels of magnesium,’ says Nicola Lowe, professor of nutritional sciences at the University of Central Lancashire.

TRY: If it has to be chocolate, opt for one that contains at least 75 per cent cocoa, as this will contain more magnesium and less sugar.

Nuts are actually a richer source, particularly Brazils. Leafy green veg are also good, as are brown rice, wholemeal bread, and pumpkin seeds — though not quite so moreish.

If you’re a chocoholic and suffer from PMS symptoms such as irritability, headaches, cramps and bloating, it may be worth trying a magnesium supplement

I do eat chocolate, but except for one day premenstrually, I don't have those intense cravings now, although I have in the past. I eat 70 calories worth of Ghiradelli chocolate chips. I let each chip dissolve in my mouth, which takes about 45 minutes, and I'm completely over wanting chocolate by the time that's done.

Strawberries do seem very sweet to me, but they are surprisingly low in sugar.

That's interesting that you are craving a food you don't like.

I would say to work treats you do like into your calorie goals.

I eat what I'm craving, though not in the amount I want. I tried the whole substitution thing and would end up eating the sub plus whatever I was craving.

For chocolate craving- if you're in the states I highly, highly, highly, recommend HALO TOP chocolate ice cream. Google it and then go to the website and put in your area code to see if it's sold anywhere near you. It gets rid of my cravings and it's very low calorie! Win/Win yay!

I eat a piece of 90% Lindt chocolate every day. Very yummy and good for you.

I sometimes make "banana swirl" (frozen bananas blended to the consistency of ice cream), mix it with a tablespoon of organic peanut butter, and then drizzle some sugar free chocolate syrup on top. Chocolate peanut butter soft serve anyone?

Quest double chocolate chunk bars get my chocolate craving every time, and for 180 cal and 20g protein I never feel bad for eating them.

I get fiber one bars, and they have a cookie also, and the fiber and other good stuff is higher and sugar is lower, I have this with a cup of coffee every afternoon because I eat my breakfast and lunch so early. It's prepackaged so I don't "accidentally" take a bigger portion than I need.

A pickle will make that craving go away, at least it works for me.
