I went for an 8.5km hike carrying a 5lb backpack yesterday and MFP reckons I burned in excess of 1009kcalories (3hrs of cross country hiking backpack weighing less than 6lbs). I walk at an average/fast peace over very rough terrain, myrunkeeper says I burned 500calories which sounds a lot more like it so that's what I've logged. My question is how can MFP be so wildly inaccurate? I don't get it.

    Both numbers are inaccurate actually.
both run keeper and MFP are using just your height and weight. Runkeeper might be using an additional metric but since neither are using your heart rate, they aren't particularly accurate

Its very difficult to get an accurate measurement for hiking. It would depend on many variables including terrain and speed. Unless you were climbing straight up the entire hike, 1000 cals seems a little high.

Runkeeper can, in fact, use your heart rate (I use an HRM). Also, the nice thing about Runkeeper is that it takes elevation changes into account. Runkeeper gets pretty darn close, at least for myself.

Any calorie burn calculation is going to be inaccurate. Hell, calories listed on foods are inaccurate (+/- 20%).

I wore my Polar HRM while hiking yesterday. Did 4.5 miles over 2 hrs and it says I burned 1100 cals. Seems steep to me, but I don't eat my exercise cals back for the most part so it doesn't really matter, I will eat some, but if I am not hungry or feel like I need food (get dizzy, etc) I don't bother. I wear the HRM more to actually monitor my heart rate and make sure I do not get up to high. My peak while hiking or other strenuous cardio exercise is usually around 180-185.

For walking HR wouldn't be particularly representative.

I suspect you've been a bit too optimistic about the demand. 8.5km in 3 hours is pretty slow, whereas MFP would anticipate about 18-20km in that time. Personally I'd say average on rough terrain would be 5kph carrying a 30-35lb daysac and weapon system.

Your RK estimate is probably reasonably close, although clearly won't account for the load-weight.

Thanks guys. Since I don't eat back my exercise cals it hasn't done any damage, I did the walk for pleasure and because I'd hurt my leg so couldn't run that day. Good to know for future. So apparently I'm a slow walker after all! feels fast to me because I'm short :P
Thanks again for clearing it up !

That's with a 30 round magazine, another 8 magazines on pouches and boxed in the daysac :)
