Weight lifting! If it's intimidating join a gym and take a few classes until you're comfortable.. Short increases of cardio to strengthen your lungs overtime! Good luck!

Maintaining a calorie deficit and living off the CICO calculation is great for asthmatics because it allows us to lose weight using food instead of relying on exercise. While exercise has a ton of benefits, it's not essential for losing weight.

If you want to exercise, make sure you're on a controller inhaler in addition to your rescue inhaler. Check with your doctor about possibly using Symicort, Dulera, or something similar.

If you're new to exercise, you might want to stick with low-impact activities in the beginning. Walking on the treadmill (don't try running yet), weightlifting (as Cosette mentioned), or using a recumbant bike might be friendlier on the lungs.

In the beginning, I would suggest you use a peakflow meter to measure the effect certain activities are having on your asthma as well.

All-in-all, I would encourage you to not let asthma keep you down. I've lost 85 lbs with serious, chronic asthma I've had since I was 5 years-old. There have been times when I've had to use an emergency nebulizer and times when I've had to slow down because my lungs can't keep up with my body, but it's very, very doable (just look at athletes like Amy VanDyken!) Just keep your rescue inhaler nearby at all times, and work your way into exercise slowly enough so you don't end up pushing too hard too quickly. And - as always, work on ways of controlling your symptoms with your doctor.

Good advice from ManiacalLaugh - I totally agree.

I find my asthma improves significantly when I lose weight so I am concentrating on the weight loss first and just walking for 40 - 110 minutes every other day to build up my fitness and a bit of stamina in my leg muscles for now. Last year I built up to completing the couch to 5k running plan until I had pleurisy (sorry, probably spelt wrong) but in the meantime there is absolutely no shame in taking a regular brisk walk.
