The "best"activity is highly personal. There are die-hard weight lifters who won't do cardio, and people who won't touch weights but run/cycle/whatever every day. Are you wondering what has the highest calorie burn, what has the least likelihood of injury, what is easiest for an overweight beginner to adjust to, or what prepares you best for a certain activity?

Without specifics add to what you are geared to, or what your goals are, all you'll get I'd people's opinions. My opinion is cycling with a bit of running mixed in for high impact benefits, but I like moving distances under my own propulsion.

In the end the best exercise is the one you'll do on a regular basis, and enjoy enough to come back again and again.

The best exercise that I have done is partner dancing because I like it. I get social benefits and stress-relief from doing it as well as fitness benefits, and as I've gotten more serious about dancing I have gotten more serious about pursuing other fitness to support that dancing (running for endurance, yoga/pilates for strength, flexibility, and balance).

The first time I stared exercising, I just made myself go to the gym to do cardio and weight machines. I got lots of benefits from it, but after six or so months I just got so bored that it seemed like a chore.

I agree on the one that you enjoy.
For me that is Les Mills Bodycombat, although I recently added pump to the mix.
I avoided strength training for years, but recently started getting interested. Now I plan on adding TRX to my schedule.

Once you find one thing you like, you might eventually start getting interested in other things. For me it is pushing my body to do things I have never done or could never do. Right now my goal is to do proper push ups on my toes.
