Aspartame

I just found this out and thought I'd share it. I thought aspartame products were an alternative for things like soda and what not, because it is calorie free. But I found out that it can actually make you gain weight by slowing your metabolism and making your body crave carbohydrates more than it should. So if you thought choosing to drink diet soda instead of regular soda as a way to lose weight AND have soda, I would reconsider! I'm glad I found this out before I took a sip of this flavored carbonated water (with aspartame.) Sugar free gum also contains aspartame most of the time. No more gum for me

It gives me terrible nausea and a belly ache from hell. There is sugar free gum with Xylitol or something that seems to be relatively ok so far. If I do diet anything, I try to at least splenda.

Aspartame is in EVERYTHING not just fizzy drinks! There are loads of scare stories that it causes cancer (what doesn't these days!)
You'll find it in anything sugar free... or reduced sugar!0 -
I heard oxygen causes cancer. Everyone stop breathing. NAO. DO IT.

According to a thread earlier, ice water gives you cancer as well. :laugh:0 -
I gave up Diet Coke (very reluctantly and it was VERY tough) in January this year. I was drinking about 1litre a day and I loved the stuff! HOWEVER, it destroyed my ability to judge hunger as it filled me up so I then just ate what I fancied, as opposed to eating proper meals at proper times and my body being ready for the meal.
Although I haven't seen a huge change in my weight, I am working on this and feel more in control of my hunger and when to eat, and when I am hungry. I feel healthier in myself too.
The only trouble I find is if I go out for a meal/drink - I am then left with no option (other than water) to have a drink with calories in it, which I do find frustrating.0 -

I really love diet coke, I always thought it was the caffeine that gave me the kick and made me feel addicted but I'm beginning to think it is the aspartame.
If I drink a lot of diet coke (ashamed to say 2litres a day) I feel really depressed and a bit crazy lady. I had always assumed it was because I wasn't falling in to the deepest part of my sleep because of the caffeine or something like that. But I found this article which rings some bells with me, it seems to pop up in lots of other forums too linked with depression.

I was going to try and stop taking it altogether and see if it is affecting my moods, but its in so much stuff it would be a massive mission. I am giving up the diet coke though0
