I have tried to do the traditional pushup several times but have not succeeded.I cannot even do the modified version (knee pushup)properly. Its been 4 months and I've still not worked my way upto a traditional pushup(not even 1 with good form). This is pretty discouraging but I would like to know the correct form of doing pushups as I think I might be doing it wrong and also how to progress into doing it... :)

You could watch a youtube video of how to do it correctly, but CORRECTIONS can't be made unless you can be assessed by seeing you actually attempting a pushup.

    Push-up progression with video

Both of them start off with push-ups (push-offs) against a wall, then gradually lower the angle until you are doing a full push-up! (And then go beyond to one-handed pushups...)

I started that way. I've just made it to full push-up on the floor.

Lay on your front flat. With your arms push your self up whilst your legs are flat on the ground. Some call it baby push ups. Do 12-16reps 30sec-1min break then do it again. 3-6sets. Work your way up. This will strenghten your arm and in due time you will do a proper push up. Dont give up..

I literally worked my way down a flight of stairs. Started with wall pushups, then a high step, and then, when I could do 20, the next step down, and so on, to the floor.

Thanks everybody for replying.! I ll not give up certainly.

I followed this post from Nerd Fitness nerdfitness.com/blog/2011/02/15/proper-push-up/
It explains technique and how to get from wall to floor.
I'm currently using the back of my couch, which is lower than table/counter height o:)

Well done!! It's one of those things that seem so easy to some people but I've always struggled with them too. After almost 3 years of training I can now do 3 sets of 10 but they're tough! I do them 3 times a week so that one day I may start to find them easier. I'm working on chin ups now. It'll probably take me another 3 years!

Even if it does, it'll be three years well spent! :)
