I am looking into getting a new bike this next week and not sure exactly what I want. I would like to do some off road (mountain biking), but also work up to long road trips too. I know that a could just buy mountain bike but they really are not ideal for long road trips. I want to be able to do both without buying 2 separate bikes. Any suggestions?

  • "Hybrid or multi use" bilke is what I just bought, tires arent as fat as mountain bikes or as skinny as a commuter bike. I bought mine from Eriks Bikes here in Mpls. 500.00 but there are cheapers ones out there just as good. It can handle both off road or pavement just as easily.

I have a Trek 7.5 FX that I am in love with. I don't think I'd do any MTB with it (in fact, I know I wouldn't) but I do love the Trek bikes ... good luck!

heard of people buying a mountain bike off road ready, and then getting thinner wheels for the road and longer rides. just switch them out whenever you want. just an idea.

also a hybrid bike would be nice if you want to be set in the middle. good for road riding and good for trail riding (not so much hardcore mountain bike riding).

Good luck and get on those two wheels!!
  • Yes I've got a Gary Fisher Yahoo which is an excellent mountain bike and comfortable for long distances. My second choice would be a GT Timberline which has excellent balance if you like riding with no hands. The Gary Fisher has more bells and whistles on it so won't be able to do the hands-free ride.

Cycling is an excellent work out and good for those who have bad knees or problems walking or running. You can ride all day with the right saddle.

    Good luck!

definitely look for a hybrid type bike as others suggested if you plan to do both types of rides. you give up a little each way, but it does provide more versatility. any good bike shops near you?

I generally stick to the road, but I'm in love with my cannondale from the early 90s. comfortable and I was able to buy it for less than 300 a couple of months ago. My sister has a cheaper schwinn hybrid she found at target that she enjoys also. It really depends on what you'd like to spend. I agree with @theladywhistler- you CAN ride all day with the right saddle :)

I don't know your budget but another thought is a cyclocross bike. They are designed to be raced in muddy conditions so by nature they can handle off road but they are drop bar bikes with thinner tires than mountain bikes so they perform well on the road as well. Like all other bikes they can get expensive but good ones can be bought for well under a grand too. This is a great option that few people are aware of. Whatever you choose, enjoy! Cycling is wonderful.
  • I meant a Gary Fisher Wahoo with disc brakes. I like to ride hands-free sometimes but because of all the extra stuff on the front wheel it doesn't balance as well as a GT Timberline. I also prefer the wide mountain bike tires because you get a smoother grip to the road. Make sure you get a really comfortable saddle because the one that came with my bike was extremely uncomfortable. This bike takes hills so smoothly and you feel very secure on it.

    Hope this helps. ;-)
