Not exactly a nice topic but it needs to be talked about: when is it ok to use laxatives?

    When you're constipated?

That's more a medical question that I couldn't begin to answer. What if I say, "After three days of not pooping" and someone takes one, but had a blockage or whatever? Eek.

    Are you constipated?

When you have not pooped for days, but have eaten substantially enough that you ought to poop, and the discomfort of not having pooped and now not being able to is present and palpable. Other than that as a bare minimum, ir is not.

As a last resort for constipation. It worries me greatly that this question is being asked. Shall I go into the terrors that laxative abuse has put me through? Including, but not limited to- risking heart and kidney failure from dehydration, bleeding stomach, low pressure, and a "lazy colon." Not to mention the whole hair and teeth falling out, skin turning gray, eyes sinking back in my head thing.

If you're constipated take some colace, drink a lot of water, walk, eat high fiber foods. But please never touch laxatives unless you absolutely HAVE to. I'm just telling you all this as a cautionary tale.

Medically speaking, when our residents haven't opened their bowels in over 5 days, have a distended or hard stomach (those of you with 6 packs don't count) and have already had warm pear juice, prunes, etc...
Then we give them a low dose (1-2 drops) of coloxyl drops. If still no movement then and only then they can have laxatives

Ok, just to clarify, I don't use laxatives.
I posted this discussion because I think that it is something that some people are uneducated about. This is a topic that should be talked about because too often I think people use laxatives to lose weight without doing research first, or maybe they are given incorrect information.

MsM is natural and good for staying regular. Also try Smooth Move herbal tea. You can find it at most grocery stores.

No. Seriously, f***ing no. If you aren't pooping properly, look to your nutrition, not laxative tea. For christs sake, you serious walked in here - to a post which could easily be read as someone considering the use of laxatives in a weight loss context - recommending senna tea? Just because it's natural doesn't mean it's not going to make you crap your brains out if you don't need a laxative.

You edited your post to say 'it needs to be talked about' when it never said that before. You're in the weight loss advice part of the community. Nobody here is that stupid.

I don't even know how it's supposed to help you lose weight. You're not losing anything but waste and your body is doing that on its own.

That's what I've always wondered. Unless they take so many that the food they eat passes straight through in record time? ?

Some people with EDs love laxatives. When you starve, you tend to lie around a lot. Combine the inactivity with the fact that your bowels get no kick-start from incoming food and constipation becomes a real issue.

Most of us have been constipated at some point. It's an issue! It's also a huge relief when you finally go. That bloated feeling we all hate - and anorexics hate more - goes away when you poop. So, they turn to laxatives.

There is also the idea that they can cheat calories by forcing them through really fast, which is not something I'm going to debate because there is no point to it.

Some get hooked on these laxatives and die or end up with lifelong bowel issues.

I took laxatives when I had serious constipation issues due to having a non-working thyroid. It's horrible. I don't know how those girls manage it, especially in their weakened states.

It's a crazy thing to do, using laxatives for weight loss. When you eat, the weight from the poop comes back, anyway.

Eat enough so that you can get up and go for a walk. Exercise is much, much better than laxatives. But anyone who is going to take them already knows that and has decided to do the unhealthy thing, so not going to debate that, either.

But if you think you have problems having an ED, adding drugs and bowel problems WON'T HELP!

Back in the early nineties after the birth of my three sons, I lived on laxatives. .its the worst thing ever. I was young stupid and extremely naive . I now have what is known 'lazy bowel ' which is basically because my body was so used to the laxatives that it won't work by itself. I'm not preaching to anyone. .Please don't take them for weight loss. ..ever . I wouldn't even recommend them for the purpose they are made, fruit and lots of water for constipation.
