So, I was out walking and listening to music today and I realised how many songs have lyrics that actually speak to me in some way....today's was Murdered in the City by the Avett Brothers and the line is:

"always remember there was nothing worth sharing like the love that let us share our name"

That line always makes me bawl....

What lyrics do you guys love?

Fallen by Volbeat. Always reminds me of my father who passed away ten years ago:
Feel the sadness burning in my heart.
You left to early father love.
So many things I should have said.
But in your mind you knew it well.
Holding on to what I got and love.
But things still seem so dark and cold.
The fire is burning down my happiness.
    But I will rise.

The Gaslight Anthem - I know, I post their *kitten* all the time - love the last verse to Here Comes My Man

Maybe time will tell you Why I got so much hell to sell you
Please, please understand me Oh you can't just dance around me
Maybe your work will love you When I'm just not there to hold you
Maybe your pride can be your companion
Oh but I just won't be there to stand for it Not one more minute will I stand for it

    Rush - Mission

    Spirits fly on dangerous missions
    Imaginations on fire
Focused high on a soaring ambition
    Consumed in a single desire

In the grip of a nameless possession
Slave to the drive of obsession
A spirit with a vision is a dream
    With a mission

    Queen - Innuendo

While the song hangs in the sky and the dessert has sand,
while the waves crash in the sea and meet the land.
While there's a wind and the stars and the rainbow,
'til the mountains crumble into the plain.
Yes, we'll keep on trying tread that fine line.
We'll keep on trying, just passing our time.

While we live according to race, colour or creed,
while we rule by blind madness and pure greed,
our lives dictated by tradition, superstition, false religion,
through the eons, and on and on.
Yes, we'll keep on trying, we'll tread that fine line
We'll keep on trying, 'til the end of time.

Gives me the chills every time

    Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah:
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?

    It goes like this
    The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
    The baffled king composing Hallelujah
I love that song! I like Jeff Buckleys version better. So pretty!

'Cause I don't have time to waste on the boys
    That are playing the games
And leaving the girls crying out in the rain
    So tell me, baby,
Are you just crazy, or crazy over me?

If you're gonna hold me, hold me like I'm leaving
If you're gonna kiss me, kiss me like you need it
Baby, if you're not, you best get to leaving
If you're gonna love me, love me like you mean it

If you're gonna talk the talk, you better walk it
If you wanna keep me, keep me like you lost it
If you're gonna say it, make me believe it
If you're gonna love me, boy, love me like you mean it

Fallen by Seether... perfectly sums up how our society is

They got injections for those facial lines
Break out the scalpel keep the nose defined
A crucifixion of the love we've known for ages
You're much too pretty you don't need your mind
Just bat them eyelids get your heart's desires
A resurrection of the shallow and the vapid

    Passage - Vienna Teng

I died in a car crash two days ago
    Was unrecognizable
When they pulled me from the gears
No one's fault, no one's bottle
No one's teenage pride or throttle
Our innocence is all the worse for fears
    The other walked away alive
Arms wrapped now around his wife

My lover sits, the silent eye
In a hurricane of warmth and word
My mother trembles with the sobs
    Whose absence seems absurd
My sister shouts to let her see
Through the cloud of crowd surrounding me
My colleagues call for silence in my name

I died in a car crash three months ago
They burned me 'til I glowed
And crumbled to a fine gray sand
    Now I am nothing, everywhere,
    Several breaths of stranger's air
And all thoughts ever written in my hand
They plant my tree out in the yard
It grows but takes the winter hard

My lover puts a knife to wrist
Says tomorrow comes, hold on a while
My mother tosses in the sheets
And dreams me holding my own child
My sister plays our homemade tapes
Laughs as tears stream down her face
My office door now bears a different name

I died in a car crash four years ago
    My tree drinks melted snow
Just eight feet tall, a pale and fragile thing
    Bee stings beaches, bright vacations
    Sunburnt high-school graduations
A sparrow healing from a broken wing
This year a glimpse of second chances
Tiny apples on my tree's branches

My lover hears the open wind
And crawls blinking into the sun
    My mother leafs through photographs
And thinks, "Yes, she was a lovely one,"
My sister can't decide her truth
Asks aloud what I might do
In a conference hall my brief efforts engraved

I died in a car crash, a lifetime ago it seems
Been a decade or two or three
They've just released a new design
Bars and bags front and behind
    My fate now an impossibility
    Safely packaged hurtling down
The highway hardly make a sound
    My lover very much alive
Arms wrapped now around his wife

I love that part from Black by Pearl Jam

"...I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky,
But why, why, why can't it be, can't it be mine?"

Great line. Devastating the way he delivers it. Whole song, really.

    Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah:
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?

    It goes like this
    The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
    The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Could do this whole thread with just Leonard Cohen lyrics, so far as I'm concerned...

So here are some of my favorites of his, from his first hit, Suzanne:

And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.

Oh, and nothing like an MFP thread to randomly remind me just how much I HATE Rhianna (her music, that is. I'm sure she's a wonderful human being otherwise)...
    Apologies to all Rhianna fans...

    When tomorrow comes
    I'll be on my own
    Feeling frightened of
The things that I don't know
    When tomorrow comes
    Tomorrow comes
    Tomorrow comes

And though the road is long
I look up to the sky
And In the dark I found, I stop and I won’t fly
And I sing along, I sing along, then I sing along

I got all I need when I got you and I
I look around me, and see sweet life
I'm stuck in the dark but you're my flashlight
You're gettin’ me, gettin’ me through the night
Can’t stop my heart when you shinin’ in my eyes
    I can’t lie, it’s a sweet life
I'm stuck in the dark but you're my flashlight
You're gettin’ me, gettin’ me through the night
    Cause you're my flash light
You're my flash light, you're my flash light

I see the shadows long beneath the mountain top
I'm not the afraid when the rain won't stop
    Cause you light the way
You light the way, you light the way
