What are splits?

Hi all, on runkeeper and on the fitbit apps there is mention of splits - I don't know what this means, can someone explain please?

Well, for running, if you are running around a track, you can split the time so you know how fast each lap is, as well as the overall time of all the laps.0

But you also can split your miles. I road and trail run and do splits based on each mile. The goal is to have your splits get faster which is tricky because (especially in a race) most runners start like gangbusters and finish slower. You want to aim for the opposite - slow warming up start and faster finish.0
