high heat rate

I am 58 years old female and I have a form off muscular dystrophy. This condition mostly affects my legs and makes walking and climbing stairs difficult. When I am on the treadmill I only need to walk at 3.2 mph for my heart rate to be up over 200. I am able to do this but I am concerned about my high heart rate . Any suggestions?

Probably best to speak with your doctor, possibly a cardiologist to ensure you are physically well enough to do the exercise. Best to not take chances with a rapid heart rate. It can effect other systems as well. In the meantime, you can continue weight loss (I am guessing this is why you are on MFP, if not, please disregard) through dietary choices.0

How are you measuring your HR? Over 200 at 58 seems almost impossible. If accurate, you really need to check with your doctor.0

Has your heart rate always been that high when you exercised? Some women can have ridiculously high heart rates. My maximum, at 41 is at around 205, but it used to be around 220 when I was younger. A short, few meter sprint to catch the bus was always enough to get my heart racing like crazy. And then it would drop down to 60ish again short time later. Some people's hearts need to pump faster to move oxygen around, some people's have huge hearts and don't need that. But your number sounds quite extreme, especially as you mentioned muscle problems. Better check it with a doctor to be sure.0

Hi I'm 47 f mine goes up to 190 when running on treadmill. ...I got checked out and was told my heart was fine. I try not to go over 150 now though. ..it does freak me out as my husbands never goes above a hundred doing the same exercise!0

What are you using to measure your heart rate? A physical is a good thing to do before you start working out.0

+1 on talking to your doctor.0

Because of my muscular issue..It does not take much to get my heart racing. I am trying to do the high/low speed but I am beginning to think this is not the right regime for me. I will go back to just a brisk" walk (for me that is 2.5 mph) instead of trying to go fast (fast for me is 3.3 mph...at this speed my legs and heart are working really hard)0

Your max heart rate is pretty high for your age. Although it is possible that it's perfectly normal for you, it's far enough above average that it wouldn't be a bad idea to get it checked out by a Dr.0

Because of your medical condition, you really need to speak to your doctor. None of us will be well versed in medicine *and* your medical history in order to give an informed opinion.
Depending on your past tests and relationship with your doctor they may just be able to give you an opinion over the phone, but you still have to consult with your doctor or staff0
