I work overnights which is fine, but two days a week I like to have a somewhat normal sleep night..but I often just can't sleep..I'm considering taking something those days. Would any of you recommend from personal experience, melatonin, ambien, or smoking marijuana?

When I worked third shift, it was easier just to get used to seeing people only in the evenings. Trying to adjust my sleep schedule to "normal" for the weekends was a fiasco on the weekends that carried over into the next work week.

Why not just keep your body on its work schedule?

Since you're in the happy state of Colorado, if you've got it, smoke it. But just remember to lock the snacks up, or be sure to log them.

It is better to stay on the same schedule every day -- better for overall health and other things as well.

Google "sleep hygiene" and you will find some ideas to get you started.

The best thing that you can do is to maintain a somewhat consistent sleep schedule.

I've had very scary experiences with Ambien, as have many other people that I know. It tends to work well at first and then not so much.

The best, simplest over-the-counter answer is Benedryl. I combine that with a very low-dose Melatonin. Of course you should run this by your doctor, and if you continue to have problems, see a sleep specialist.

Another vote for keeping a consistent sleep schedule.

As someone who has dealt with pretty steady insomnia since a very young age (think preschool), I am all for getting sleep every moment you can. Medications and OTC things never worked for me, but have given me some really gnarly side effects, including even worse insomnia (who knew sleeping pills actually can keep you from sleeping?) and put me into emotional distress. I'd run the list of side effects, but I'll spare you.
