I started this and got HUGE helpful ideas!
Recipes and fab website!!!
I'm also new to MFP but also new to vegetarianism so I will eat a very few and select animal protein once in a while as my husband is a carnivore and kids eat some meat! I'm so excited to start logging a food diary in the morning! Tech savvy I am not, but determined yes yes yes!!
Friend me love!0 -
Why have you stopped eating meat?0

It started as one of those food aversions with my first pregnancy (10yes ago)! Then it just kind of stuck! Don't get me wrong I've tried eating red meat since but I get physically ill! So it's easier to not make myself sick you know! But I can tolerate limited amounts of chicken and some types of fish!0

Hi there Michellemundi,
I've been vegetarian for 8 years - no meat no seafood. I used to love meat, especially seafood, my favourite... But I quit for animal reasons. My food tips - if you're craving meat, instead: try a pasta recipe with either a rich tomato sauce, or a creamy/cheesy base - these rich foods should stave off meat cravings. (Watch the calories...) Vegetable lasagne is a winner - it's creamy, cheesy, tomatoey. Haloumi cheese is as meaty and salty as cheese gets. Make sure your food has enough salt in it otherwise it can taste bland. Roast veggies are really good - I know that sounds boring but there are some cool recipes.
Congratulations on giving up meat! You are very brave. - Isobel.0 -
Was going to try vegan but it's to hard, so I'm leaving out meat and dairy, any junk food aswel. And more excercises0

I have been mostly vegan (about 90 to 95%) for the last 4 and a half years but have an omni husband, a 17 year old who lives on carbs and a 13 year old who would probably be vegan if she didn't adore pig and salmon. I have a couple of strategies that help keep me on target and minimize the chaos at mealtime. I try to roughly plan my meals for the week in advance, and do a fair amount of weekend pre-cooking for my breakfasts and lunches. Almost all families have some meatless meals in their rotation already, or some that are easily adaptable that your whole family can eat-- pasta with red sauce or low-fat pesto, grilled cheese sandwiches and tomatoe soup etc. We also do a lot of breakfast for dinner (vegan pancakes, vegan waffles, omelets for the egg eaters). I often have a variation of what the rest of my family is eating so I don't feel left out-- bean tacos while they eat turkey tacos, cheese-less homemade pizza for me, stuffed baked potatoes with meat-free filling for me, a veggie burger when they eat beef or turkey burgers (you get the idea!). My husband is very supportive and will gamely try many meatless meals but reserves the right to have a piece of bread with sandwich meat and cheese after dinner if he is isn't quite satisfied. I was never a huge meat fan and it was relatively easy to give up meat (now cheese is another thing. . . ) but even after four and half years bacon still always smells good to me! But I know how sick I'd feel if I ate it and I have developed a fondness for the occasional slice of Fakin' Bacon . Good luck with the journey and feel free to add me as a friend.0

I've been a vegetarian (mostly vegan - I only eat pasture raised eggs) for 17 years. My husband is a meat eater and I don't cook meat but do cook everything else - this means that he ends up cooking his meat to go along with whatever I cook. He's very health conscious and only eats fish, bone/skinless chicken breasts, and ground turkey. He typically finds a recipe and cooks his meat ahead of time, usually enough to last 3 days or so. We both love the vegan and vegetarian recipes I cook because they taste great and are satisfying. I recommend the Post-Punk Kitchen - really, really good food there - as well as the Whole Foods recipe search (you can find a huge variety of easy to make recipes there). As far as meat cravings: Are you getting enough and varied enough protein? Try all of the less-processed vegetarian high protein sources - tofu, tempeh, seitan - and them legumes like edamame and lentils. I also drink a hemp protein shake by Nutiva. As for taste: If you like fish, homemade avocado, cucumber, carrot, and brown rice sushi seaweed rolls are very satisfying. Mushrooms are a great meat substitute as well (they have that meat umami flavor as do soy sauce and miso). Overall - make sure that your food tastes good!0
