Brown Rice...Alternatives?

I love some chicken, with some bbq sauce or ranch, I could eat it twice or more every single day, but I'm finding the brown rice I typically eat it with less and less appealing...any healthy alternatives? What do you like in the grain/carb type foods?

I'm assuming you were doing brown rice instead on white rice. If you don't like the brown rice just go back to eating white rice.0 -

I think I will, but both are fairly flavor-less...imo

If you don't like either just don't eat them. No one should have to eat food they don't like. Another option is put something in its not so bland. One of my favorites to do with rice is buy mirepoix, sautée with a drop of oil or butter (which ever one you like to cook with). Once it is sautéed enough, add the rice and sautée the rice with the veggies. To me when I do this, I feel like I'm eating fried rice.0 -
Try jasmine or Basmati white rice. Much nicer than ye olde original white rice.0

Also, I've been liking the BirdsEye SteamFresh rice/veggie products. Rice or risotto with added veg. Quick, tasty and healthy.0

I love the combination of sweet potato with chicken, either just baked plain or roasted in chunks. Other ideas are perhaps cous cous or puy lentils - with both I add herbs to increase the flavour levels, although puy lentils have a fantastic flavour all alone. I've recently also been using tins of white beans (cannellini, butter beans etc) and mashing with garlic and lemon to make a fantastic mash substitute. I'm betting that goes pretty nicely with bbq chicken!0

Add some stock powder to it. Tastes a bit like the savoury rice you get in packs. You then have various options-chicken, vegetable, beef etc or even some curry powder0

Stir some very fine/small vegetable cubes through the brown rice (ratio 1:3 or 1:2) and maybe a half cup of warm water and some dried chicken/beef/vege gravy flakes.
Seriously, don't give up on brown rice. As I recall, it has about 3x to 4x the fibre of white rice. Much better for your gut and your digestion.0 -
Try different seasonings added to your rice.
My family liked this.-> budgetbytes.com/2014/09/snap-challenge-seasoned-rice/
With chicken I might have potatoes, white rice, wild rice, pasta, or vegetables prepared in various ways with a variety of seasonings.0 -
I replaced rice as a side dish with Lucky Charms.0

You could use a quinoa or a mix of quinoa and brown rice. Brown rice is nutritious so maybe try adding spices or cooking it in stock? Mix in different kinds of beans. You could also make a brown rice salad ( eg http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/2592/brown+rice+roast+pumpkin+and+seed+salad) as a side - would go great with chicken.
ETA: I love cauliflower mash too. Super easy to make - steam cauliflower and blend.0 -
I like bulgur. For example: eatingwell.com/recipes/fresh_herb_lemon_bulgur_pilaf.html
Couscous is also good.0 -
Tbh, I don't eat rice at all and also avoid potatoes (except sweet potatoes).
With chicken and other stuff that has some sauce with it, I like cauliflower, minced to rice-like bits. Yum!
Tastes really fresh and goes well with lots of food.0 -
I eat white rice because brown rice takes too long to cook. You could also try quinoa. I think it's wonderful stuff.0

Brown rice is fine, but aside from some extra fiber and nutrients in the bran coat there's no special weight-loss magic to it. It also will spoil, so you have to use it more quickly than white rice.
My go-to starch type items are either whole grain bread or mashed potatoes. As much as I like making my own mashed potatoes, the packaged stuff is actually tasty enough and quick to make (a big plus in my case). A package of that will stretch for 3-4 meals easy.

There are so many amazing and tasty grains and grain-like items out there -- barley, farro, bulgur, oats, quinoa, couscous, orzo, and wild rice come to mind. You can also mix it up with different types of rice -- I love jasmine rice. I also sometimes toast some nuts and add them to the rice or chop up some vegetables and cook them with the rice for extra interest.0

Try Quinoa. It's completely flavorless, but it takes on whatever flavor you cook it with. I like to cook it in a low sodium veggie broth, seasoned with granulated onion, garlic and sometimes tumeric. Eat it hot, or eat it cold. When eating it cold, I like to toss it with some evoo and lemon juice, throw in some chickpeas and a slivered almonds. If I'm feeling extra fiesty, I throw in a small handful of dried cranberries.0

What brands of rice are you using? Are they instant or pre-cooked at all? This could affect flavor. I use Lundberg brown rice and Thai Jasmine white rice and they both have a lot of flavor to me. I add salt and a 1/4 t of coriander to the white rice and salt and 1/2 t Italian seasoning to brown rice.

I love rice... especially Uncle Ben's Natural Select Rice with natural flavours added, the Spanish style is great as is the chicken and herb flavour.0
