Rucking Makes You Hard Like a Rock

Or that's what an ex-military friend of mine told me. Said if you want a great workout, load up a ruck sack and go for a walk or hike.
So I'm considering doing this about once a week. I already have a rucksack. I bought one in preparation for an elk hunt I'm going on in the near future, but I figure I need to go ahead and get used to it as well with all the walking and hiking why not start. My problem is, I don't know how to load one or what would I load one with just for a workout and how much weight to use.
Any advice out there?
