I started a lifestyle change with a great friend at work but I have whizzed right by her and am almost to my goal weight. Of course I still have long way to go in the fitness category to tone and sculpt but she has gotten stuck.

I watched her go from excitement and such a happy glow on her face to looking more and more defeated by the lack of movement.

She has been through or is in menopause so I know it's going to be tougher for her but do any of you women out there have any suggestions for her that I can pass on during our workout tonight?

She is working really hard and I would love to see her succeed!

Thank you!!!

I'm going through the same thing. Menopause mostly done, metabolism slowed, weight loss slowed.

She needs to analyze her workouts and diet.

She should be performing some sort of strength training regularly so that she is rebuilding lost muscle. Muscle is key to bumping the metabolism up. We of older age do not have the same muscles as you young'uns. We have to work harder to build it and keep it.

Cardiovascular is also necessary, but don't listen to the latest trends about "just 10 minutes a day". That's hogwash. They say that because they are just trying to get sedentary people out and about without scaring them too much.

But really, a minimum of 45 minutes per day (6 days a week) is necessary for weight loss. For maintenance, 4 days per week is probably sufficient, but we are each different and need to determine that for ourselves.

I hope she is counting more than calories in her diet, too. All calories are not created equal. Sugars and starches have a detrimental effect on weight loss in post-menopausal women. Stick with light fruits, non-starchy veggies, lean protein, dairy, and eggs.

Personally, I'm following the 17-Day Diet with very good result. My results are not as good as the younger women in my support group, but I am happy with my progress. I follow the food requirements very closely and I exercise more like an hour a day (not the minimum 17 minutes the diet requires).

In 45 days, I have lost 17.5 pounds. My previous efforts (counting carbs alone or calories alone) failed miserably.

    Hope this helps.

I am in the same boat. I lost 1-2 lbs a week (40) pounds) and now it has taken me 6 months to do two pounds. While it is very very discouraging, I'm sticking right the plan. I am 58 years old and I gave myself until I hit 60 years to be the down to where I shou;ld be. I am going to be 59 this october. Just a year to go!!!!

I know exactly what she is going through. Last summer, I worked really hard and lost only 5 pounds in 2 months. I went to the gym daily, fitness trainer, counted calories, etc. It is d*** near impossible to lose weight when your hormones are all out of wack. I finally in January went to the doctor, I am now on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and I have lost 31 pounds since. It is still a struggle because they are not correct levels, just yet, but I can tell a big difference already. I am only 35 years old and I am postmenopausal because of a medical condition I have.

ETA: Be sure you don't brag to her.(Although you have bragging rights, you lost weight, yay you!) That only makes matters worse. I am sure she sees that you are more fit everday and it only makes her feel like a failure. Be sure to tell her positive things like, you may not be seeing the scales go down, but I can tell in your face you have lost, etc.. or something of the nature. I am speaking from experience, I have a little skinny friend that is always been in competition with me, if I have a small achievement, it amounts to absolutely nothing compare to hers. It always made me want to give up, now I just don't tell her my success stories.

Thanks for all the great tips!

I know she works out way more than I do. I do only 30 mins of circuit training and then 30 min jog but she does 60 mins of what looks to be a very intense step aerobic class and then 30 minutes of free weights and 15 mins of abs and core. Both of us work out M-Sat with Sun as a rest day.

She is doing more than counting cals because she always reminds me that I need to watch my sugars and we both changed our diets to non processed foods that are high protein, low fat and low carb right now.

She has mentioned that peers tells her that if she takes hormones it will make a huge difference but she doesn't want to do that for whatever reasons.

I'll just keep motivating her and telling her how great she is looking. Maybe that is all she really needs to get her spark back! I never tell her about my changes unless she asks me point blank.

I had a complete hysterectomy last March- age 47. I also suffer from hypothryoidism. It has been an uphill battle, but just in January is when my hormones went wacky. I am taking estrogel and synthyroid and it seems that I am gaining a pound a week. I eat healthy (lean meats, fruits veggies) exercise 4-5 times a week, but I am now depressed about the gain. I am now moody, losing my hair, have Acne.. things I never faced before.. I have been logging for 150 days, but nothing but weight gain, low self esteem....

I have finally convinced my FP that I need to see an endrocrologist- the earliest they can see me is SEPTEMBER.. I don't think I can last that long..
