Trying To Make My Own Yogurt
Anyone have any good ideas for making yogurt? The grocery type all has lots of sugar. Milk doesn't...so I thought I'd try my own. I poured the whey from my store bought yogurt, mixed it with skim milk at about 110 degrees. It's cooling now, won't know anything until tomorrow, probably.
If anyone has done it before, please let me know...welcome all ideas. Thanks.

I do make my own yogurt! I love it. I use plain all natural yogurt from the store as a beginner culture and I fortunately have access to fresh raw cow milk so I use that instead of store milk but it works with either. I started after watching this video, but it is a bit confusing. I watched it several times, then wrote out the directions in order first. I also learned to use new starter culture every time rather than reusing the yogurt that I had just made because it starts getting kind of a vinegar-y flavor after several makings. Enjoy!

Something I read in Sandor Ellis Katz' wild fermentation. - don't be tempted to put more yoghurt culture in. It needs the space to grow. He suggests 15ml per litre of milk. I use raw Jersey milk and use a thermos flask. . It's lovely.0

Hi there,..I've been making greek yogurt for my family for a couple of months now and they love it! I've made it about 6 times already and it has always been great...the trick is to keep it at 110 degrees..I use a good quality greek yogurt (about 1/4 cup for a starter) , 1 gallon of 2% milk, and 1 cup whipping cream.. I have made yogurt using the directions on this website for about a year now, and it doesn't fail! I started making yogurt after my last trip to France, and I have found that it is remarkably similar in taste to my French "mom's".
The only ingredients are: a good quality organic milk (I use 2%- skim milk does not produce a good consistency) and a few Tbsp of plain organic full-fat yogurt
The tricky part is finding a heating pad WITHOUT an automatic shutoff. After you have pitched the yogurt culture into the properly cooled milk, it will need to stay at that temperature for 7 hours (I allow mine 9 hours). After that, ABSOLUTELY let it cool overnight in the refrigerator. Stir the next morning and enjoy!

This is the recipe I use at least once a week...it's never failed me Then I strain the whey out. It's sooooo awesome!0 -
Hey, thanks everyone! Will definitely try this the right way. Unfortunately, here in the state of Maryland, we can't get raw milk, unless we own a cow, LOL, really. So knowing that store bought milk works, makes me happy. Thanks again.0

I have a crockpot recipe for this...just google "crockpot yogurt" and you should find something. I tried it once and it was good, tho it was abit runny. I think it worked best with the whole milk, which you may or may not want to use. It made plain yogurt and we ate it over fresh fruit in the morning for breakfast. It was not as creamy/thick as store bought stuff0
