I've been at this for nearly 8 months and I've lost 50lbs. Changed my diet and added in mostly running for exercise. Currently sitting at 197lbs and things have pretty well settled there. Most of my body fat resides in my mid section/love handles. I've started some weight training and I continue to run an average of 8 or so miles a week. Anyone here in a similar spot? I want to make sure I keep burning fat in those two areas and it seems to me running is the best way to do that. Anyone been through this and have pointers?

I've got a similar story although perhaps a little more total to lose. In September last year I started out at 255#; I'm medium framed and 5' 7.5" so that was potentially 105 pounds over where I should be. In retrospect the first 40 - 50 pounds were quite easy to drop. I adopted running at the outset as I'd been a distance runner in my fitter younger days to it was natural for me to want to run again. Looking back over my log I only ran something over 220 km from September through December - basically 8 miles a week on average.
Today I run 220km a month or more and I'm down 72 pounds from the start. Over the past month I've noticed pretty substantial body shape changes but not so much weight - I'm still losing but at a somewhat slower rate. I chalk this up to my greatly increased running volume; I'm feeding myself well to support that, but still keeping some calorie deficit virtually every day.
I'm doing some body weight work outs (and adding more) for strength training plus renovating this old house gives me other opportunities to put other parts of the body to work. I'm not a stranger to the gym at all, I just prefer to be outside, running or cycling.
You can't spot reduce fat, so your best bet is to continue achieving a calorie deficit and eventually those problem areas will reduce further. No doubt you've already seen major changes! I found my "love handles" seemed to start reducing last and in fact it's only been the last little while that I can tell I've specifically lost some fat accumulation there. The tape around my waist and belly told me my circumference was shrinking long before but the tape couldn't tell me from from where exactly.
Congratulations on your achievement to date!0 -

Thanks for your story mwyvr. It does sound like a similar one. I started at 247lbs. I completely agree with being outside too. I'm going to have to see if I can increase my overall miles. I know it's going to take a substantial amount of time to rid myself of the midsection. Additional miles is only going to make the progress easier. It's great to hear others who are doing the same thing and have gotten results. If you don't mind me asking, what is your daily calorie target?
