I am in a wheelchair due to a mld right side stroke. I am unable to walk but I do get on a cardio exercise bike each day and ride 10 minutes at a time 2 to 3 times daily. I also do about 30 minutes daily of strength training exercises most are upper body. Would love any suggestions.

I would suggest you discuss this with a physical therapist.
Since we don't know your exact medical history it would not be wise to suggest anything...0 -
Sounds as if you are very active, well done for your determination!0

It sounds like you are off to a great start!
I would suggest speaking to a PT ( You should be able to get a referral from the stroke and being in a wheel chair). They would be able to build you some at home exercises.
If you do go see a PT- ask about resistance bands. ( I'm 90% sure they will bring them up anyway) I've used bands when I was recovering from ankle surgery and they seemed to help.0 -
Thanks to all who replied --as/smile, joolieb1,and troutsy. I am going to ask about resistance bands. My P.T. seems to think it will be very difficult to lose weight and she also thinks I will just give up when I realize how slowly weight comes off. I am very much determined to stick with it.0

Good for you! Good luck on your weightloss.
It sounds like it will be harder for you than most, but if you stick with it I'm sure you'll make it.0 -

That was not very encouraging of them
Hmmmmm
Sorry you got that sort of reply. I admire your determination.
Diet will take weight off. Exercise will help your mobility a bit.
Please share how things go and what you can do.
Can you do basically dips to lift your torso vertically in the chair?
Take care and keep your positive attitude!

Your pt kind of rubs me the wrong way... Doesn't seem like a good attitude towards a client.
Just remember- to lose weight you need to eat less than you burn. If you are eating back your exercise calories, I'd recommend only eating half back because the machines and mfp over estimate the calorie burns. If you don't have one, you may want to consider investing in a food scale to help you be more accurate with your intake.
Good luck to you op! Wishing you the best.0 -
Hi I am just adjusting to using a wheelchair to walk to park and long distances to CVS & Kroger up to this point i have gone from Trek Poles to keep from falling to 3 wheel walker to 4 wheel walker ...I can walk a few miles but my legs quit when i try to come home...I almost killed myself LOL in damn wheelchair trying to keep from going off the sidewalk and into curb in bicycle path yesterday was my first day out..now today i did better using the front of the rim bar in front of wheel grab bar exc.,today i grabbed upper front of wheelchair rim bar and did not weave back and forth but you really need arm and muscles to pull those wheels forward so i walk with wheelchair 80% and roll 20% until i build up arm muscles..inside home i am working out with glove weights and wrist weights for all above the arm curls..i have resistance bands..and i have tai chi dvd and yoga dvd i use chairs for support and i use canes around house..i am cutting out 75% carbs and going more raw vegs raw fruit more fiber am waiting for biopsy report from colonoscopy and am a cancer survivor its a good day to be alive happy im still here at 62 years old and still fiesty...found out folks dont need fancy equipt to work out just put a can of beans in each hand and do arm lifts...leg lifts if you can...i can do wall push ups ect good luck..im still learning how to not get killed weaving back and forth in wheelchair..grin..0
