Being hispanic and being around ignorant people makes it even harder to lose weight. My husband and his dad always say that as long as my husband loves me its ok to be heavy. But thye dont get thats its not about them its about the way i feel and how i see myself. They see me eating a salad and they make fun of me or if they see me making scrambled eggs with cooking SPRAy tthey think it just an invention it seems like they've been in a cave they act like they've never seen such a thing. Tis is why i have given up on myself for so long its my time now and i have decided to plugg my ears and have taken one day at a time to lose weight, but with no support nd negativity around me its hard specialy when i want to ZUMBa i get shy cause my boyfriend is. In the room with me but its like so what its my problem and i want to lose weight lol my fitness pal is great.

You have to do this for you. They should be supportative. I would sit down with them and explain why it is so important to you to be healthy. Hopefully, they would understand.

I do not care anymore what others think. I do what I am doing for me. You just keep at it. Do it for yourself and for your health.

Good for you, don't let them put you off.

It's not only about how you feel, it's about your health. Tell them you want to get slim and fit so you can look after them better. Men are suckers for that sort of rubbish.

Wow... Great welcome to a new member, very supportive. Not. Actually, I have both a boyfriend and a husband (happily separated for years and years but not divorced), and we do socialise together, you know what you can do with your flippant comments! Or perhaps they are not actually married but refer to each other sometimes as husband and wife.

If they trully love you, they will support you. make sure they know how much it means to you. If not then get fit and healthy for yourself anyway. good luck and come here often there are many wonderful people who will support you and cheer for you. :drinker:

Honey I know exactly how you feel!!! I have been on this journey since Nov 1st 2010 and my BF has just now started accepting the new way of cooking and eating!! My mom raised me eating everything fried....literally everything.....we ALWAYS had battered and fried pork chops, mashed potatoes, and green beans ( cooked with 3 slices of bacon) They still give me a hard time when I go over there and I don't want to eat what they cook. My best suggestion for you is to find a super yummy healthy recipe and invite them over for dinner, show them that cooking healthy can taste good too!!!

If the continue to be unsupportive you just have to ignore them. You aren't doing this for your Husband, you are doing this for YOU!!! If you are unhappy with your body then YOU have to do something about it, dont care what other people say or think!!! this is about YOU!!!

Ugh..I totally get where you're coming from. My ex was always saying "Why bother working out? I already like you." Um, yeah, well at 260 pounds, I didn't like myself. Do it for you and just ignore all the negatives they're throwing at you. When they see how much happier you are and how much more energy you have, they'll leave you alone about it. Good luck on your journey!

Besides, she's hispanic, English may not be her first language. Sheesh...

Who is making flippant comments now? This is so offensive.
Way more than the boyfriend/husband comment which obviously was confusing.

This is a long hard journey that you can and have to do for yourself. It is so worth it. Some close friends and family won't understand and be supportive at first. Keep at it. As change happens they will understand and hopefully become more supportive.
This site is so great for support. There are some in my life I can't talk about these things with but I can ALWAYS come here and find great encouragement. We are all here for you through the great progress and the frustrating lows. Keep it up and stay strong!

I am not Hispanic, but I live near/work with alot of the guys that are, and you are right - they don't get it. They like fluffy, not skinny (the only ones who should be skinny are the younger single girls). When you are married, you should be worried about having babies, and they expect you to be fluffy. My husband likes me 'curvy.'

However - this, as you have already figured out, is not healthy Congrats on wanting to work on you! I tell my husband 'thank you' for loving me as me, but I need to be a bit better, and after we talked, he is being supportive.

Now - tell you dad/brother/uncle/husband/boyfriend, when they make fun of you (when you are cooking) , "GET OUT OF MY KITCHEN." Wave a knife if you have to (sorta joking...). The kitchen is YOUR space - where you can make your lunches to take to work (or put in the fridge for later). Make up your snacks, so when you get the munchies, you have something friendly to eat. It doesn't matter what the guys are eating.

If they make fun of your salad, just tell them it's girl food, and leave it at that. Eventually they will come around - as you get hotter, and hotter and hotter.

Remember - we are here for you. You are not alone! Check in every day, and good luck!

BWahh!!! LOVE IT!!!...and I'm using it!!!

It really is about no one but yourself. Do not let other peoples opinions affect how you take care of yourself. You are worth the effort!
