So I had my first green smoothie today! I can't believe it's taken me so long. I've been a vegan for a while now, and an 80/20 raw foodist for almost two weeks now, and smoothies are a staple of the raw community. Mine actually turned out murky brown, but I'm still calling it a "green" smoothie because there were tons of veggies in there. Though I don't think it was enough. The ratio of fruits to veggies was about 2:1. I'd like to flip those numbers around without sacrificing the delicious sweet flavor I experienced at breakfast today.
And it was SO MUCH FOOD. I actually spooned mine out of a bowl because it was so thick. It filled my jumbo sized cereal bowl for *under 200 calories* and has kept me (almost uncomfortably) full for a good 4 1/2 hours now. What is this witchcraft?!

So what are the best ingredients for a raw VEGAN smoothie? Any suggestions, guys?

Can you share what you put in it? I've never actually heard of a "green" smoothie

I so cannot wait to try one of these smoothies, since I have such a problem with eating breakfast food (I get such an upset stomach). Now if only I could find my blender....

Yeah! A green smoothie is, essentially, a smoothie that isn't all fruits and sugar. Allegedly you can load them up with all kinds of vegetables and add ins to support different areas of health. There's smoothies for smooth skin, smoothies for weight loss, even smoothies to diffuse carcinogens! The idea is that you blend down more vegetables and fruits than most people eat in a day and eat it in one fell swoop. They're a great way to get healthy for anybody, but they're especially good for veggie haters (which I am NOT) because they taste like delicious fruit juices.

So today my recipe involved half an apple, some strawberries, frozen banana slices, a cup of spinach, a chopped carrot, celery, and ground flax seed. I wasn't feeling very adventurous because I wanted my first smoothie to be at least tolerable so I wouldn't get discouraged. Success!

so you dont have to add yogurt or anything? Most smoothie recipes have yogurt or milk, which I hate!!!

Some recipes involve yogurt, but like I said, I'm a vegan. So I certainly hope it's not an imperative ingredient.
That's the glory of the smoothie though, isn't it?

Love green smoothies! An apple is always a good addition, lots of fiber to fill you up. I usually use coconut water for the liquid, potassium and a hint of sweetness, two big handfuls of baby spinach and a cup of frozen mixed berries= smoothie perfection. Also a smoothie of watermelon chunks, a squeeze of fresh lime juice, coconut water and spinach is so summery delicious. Enjoy!

Edited to change tense. Yup, anal.
  • My green smoothie is 1/3 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk, (can use skim but more cals), 1 small banana, 1tbsp ground flax, 2 big handfuls baby spinach (sold in bags by the ready made salads) and ice. If my banana is ripe, I don't need honey or agave. It's perfectly sweet. Of course, if you're not restricting cals as much, you can add more flax. If your smoothie isn't blending well, add a little water.

Sounds sooo yummy! I love to stick ground flax seed in my smoothies too to get the Omega 3s! Have you tried Amazing Grass® Green SuperFood® All Natural Drink Powder? One scoop is like 30 calories and is full of all different greens! I can't really stomach it in water, but when I put it in a smoothie yum! Can't taste it! I have the lemon lime flavor with yerba mate for energy. So good! It's vegan.

    Quick question:
How did you get it to 200 calories?

I've done Green smoothies over two years now with Kale Spinach, Mixed Berries, Yoghurt, Banana, Flax Oil, and Acai Juice but it's never under 200 calories. May I ask what your proportions are?

I use green smoothie girl, who's famous for it. She's a "raw" food specialist, which I am not completely into but because of that, all of her ingredients are pure. She also has two munchkins that she helps stay healthy so she has many variations to her smoothies and lifestyles if you just can't handle the pure green :)

So I ended up making a "green" smoothie for dinner but it turned a gross brown color. It's yummy though! It has spinach, kale, colored peppers strips, strawberries, peaches, blueberries, raspberries, water, ground flax seed, and a little bit of banana.
