Flag it as spam. 5 flags and it goes away.

The downside is that for every post that gets removed from 5 flags, theres like three more posts popping up. Crazy stuff

Exactly thus why on the main spam flagging thread I asked if there's a way to just block users from posting again after they've had a post flagged for spam. ;) Seems like this should be do-able, and would cut it down a bit.

This thread, the last few pages gives some hints, also a good spot to have a whinge about the spam. The moderators keep an eye on it.

They're not bored, they're paid by shady marketing companies - it's called astroturfing, and for people who are used to subsisting on less than a dollar a day, it's a very real way of making enough money to feed their families.

It used to be that people would infiltrate fora, and then subtly post about whichever product was being peddled. It was a standard PR tactic 10-12 years ago. These days, unscrupulous marketers just get a bunch of people from developing nations off Elance, Upwork, etc., and pay them to spam the heck out of fora, regardless of whether said fora have anything to do with the product or service. They also leave spammy, nonsensical comments on blogs, and send spam emails.

In some cases, bots and scripts may be used to post this junk, and since MFP's security is almost non-existent, it's really not difficult to set up something to simply spam the boards... hence it feeling a bit like a hydra. (For three years, MFP has been promising to switch to using SSL but still hasn't, which is why it - and consequently, our personal data - has been hacked several times).

Oh noez Aamb... I didn't mean it to sound as though I was doing the waggy finger thing! I'm genuinely sorry if my post came across that way. :(

No, please don't MB9 - the sooner dodgy folk in the West stop taking advantage of the world's poor, the better. And the best way to get them to stop doing that, and start behaving like decent, responsible human beings, is to hit them where it hurts... their pockets. I do believe that when it stops being profitable for them, they'll stop the exploitation; and it will stop being profitable if we all do our bit to stop this kind of nonsense (e.g. by flagging the spam). Sometimes you have to be a bit cruel in order to effect a long-term change for the better.

So absolutely keep flagging the spam. Besides, it's a great sense of satisfaction when you're the fifth person to flag it, and you see it magically disappear before your very eyes! :D
