So I began watching what I eat and trying to exercise regularly. I began working out only about a week ago, even though this is my first day on myfitnesspal.com. I weighed myself this morning and noticed I GAINED 2 lbs! Surely I must be doing something wrong. Now, I'm not a quitter and I am definitely not about to give up but it's very discouraging.

Any tips on staying motivated or anyone else going through this? Please help!

You need to tell yourself that it's a new week. Yeah, seeing a +2 utterly stinks but 2 lbs shouldn't beat you. Are you eating the right things or filling up on empty calories? How about exercise, maybe change your routine or add something different into the mix to surprise your body.

Put the scale away for a few weeks... Take some starting measurements and use this site for support and keep going!! Your weight can change as much as 5lbs during a normal day, so 2lbs could just be water... Weight loss takes time, effort, and consistancy. Do Not get discouraged!!! Good luck on this journey/life change!!

Focus more on the long term not the short term, it's not the slight gains that make or break the weight loss journey it's how we choose to deal with it when it happens, its inevitable that when you undertake something as important and reliant on our own self dicipline as weight loss that we are going to have ups and downs. At the end of the day it has to work if you stick at it its science energy in versus energy out. Keep up the awesome work :)

Don't let 2 pounds beat you! Trust me, I know how devistating a gain can feel, but if you only recently started working out, it's a possibility that you've built some muscle. Take measurements and drink lots and lots of water. LOTS! Also, make sure you're doing cardio AND strength, because muscle eats fat. Switch up your routine often, as well, because your body won't work as hard when it gets used to something. Most importantly, don't give up on yourself! You CAN do this!

Body weight fluctuates a few pounds from time to time. Usually it's just water weight. I lost all my weight doing just cardio without strength training. I did not vary my routine. You can do this. Be patient.

And drink your water !!! ... Your body will retain water in a helacious manner when you are building muscle... Drinking sufficient quantities helps counteract that a bit. (sounds like an oxymoron, but well, it is)
I can gain as much as 4 pounds in one day from the effects of sodium in my diet too... Again .. water helps.
Don't quit, you're just getting started..
~Each unsuccessful attempt is merely an experiment to see what doesn't work. The only true failure is giving up.

This is really normal when you start a new exercise regimen. Your body is storing extra water to help heal your muscles so even though you've started burning fat the scale might actually go up. Just keep hydrated, make sure you're getting good nutrition and keep exercising - you'll see results soon enough.
