Quitting Smoking and Losing Weight?

So i've lost 38 pounds in the last couple of weeks, and for that i'm extremely thankful. However, I am ready to also quit smoking. I've been trying to cut back slowly, because I tried quitting cold turkey and it didn't work. I am not going to go for the pills/patches whatever other things are out there. The whole point of quitting smoking is to save money and those methods cost money that I truly don't have.
Has anyone had success in quitting smoking and losing weight? I have heard that quitting smoking makes you want to eat more, but so far by cutting down I don't feel like eating more, I just feel like throwing someone through a wall. Anyone have any tips for losing weight and quitting smoking, that don't include any kind of outside supplements?

Congrats on your loss and deciding to quit smoking. I did it in reverse. I quit smoking 7 months ago. I use a vapor now and that has helped me not gain the "quit smoking weight" I started my weight loss journey about 3 weeks ago.
The reason why you eat more when you quit is because your taste buds and senses come alive. you want to eat all things!. Everything just smells and tastes better. If you are a regular smoker, i would look at ecig vapors. Its much easier to ween yourself off those then cigarettes. by the end of the summer i will be done with my vapor.0 -
Hi
I quit smoking three years ago. I did not gain any weight. I'm one of those people that researches things to death and I found this site was motivating for helping the quit. http://whyquit.com
I believe the more I understood what my body was going through the better equipped I was to deal with the side effects of not having nicotine.
The other thing I did was signed up for an obstacle race. It was a Warrior Dash 5km with daunting obstacles. It was something I had to work towards and train for, and it was motivating. I found after quitting, the hills I walked up, after a few months, I was slow jogging them and not wheezing or having to stop AT ALL. SUCCESS!
I also found the more I trained, the less hungry I was. I was using MFP at the time off and on, so I did lose a lot of weight during that period.
Two other things that stuck out to me
1) I had SO MUCH MORE MONEY. I bought new exercise clothes with it. It was AMAZING.
2) I bought SMALLER clothes. I went through about 4 months of buying new clothes with every paycheque because previously hadn't had the money, nor the desire to (I was larger).
Its now three years later. No desire whatsoever to smoke. I gained back all my weight because I felt in love with a man and we got Fappy together (fat and happy) and now I'm back to lose the weight again.
If you need support or have questions or just want to vent, add me.

Thanks both of you! I have a vape, and have been trying to use it. It works well at home, but I have a heck of a time at work and when i'm in the car. I know it's mind over matter, but geez it is frustrating. I need to think about saving money which at $250 a month on cigarettes, that definitely adds up! I am in college and have just found out I only have $14,000 left in federal financial aid which will only cover one more year and I still have 2 and a half years left. I have to figure out how to pay for schooling, and cutting unnecessary costs will help. Either way, thanks for getting back to me, and I will definitely look at that site thanks!0

I'm not trying to say the vape won't work for you, but I do want to add something to this from my experience.
OP: Vaping still has nicotine and while you're not "smoking" you're still having the addictive drug in your system which is what you have to get rid of. You can reduce the amount of nicotine sure, but that takes time. If you can just suck it up for 14 days..just 14 days, one day at a time you'll get over 90% of your urges to smoke without having to spend money and time on vaping.
Also, for some people Vaping has become more of an enabler because you can virtually do it anywhere. While you might have never smoked in your house, now you might. Or in your car, or restaurants. Its one of those things that gets looked at a bit less than cigarettes so people tend to exploit that. Just be careful.0 -

yes it does have nicotine, if you choose. there are options for those that want to be nicotine free. In 7 months i have gone from 18mg to 6mg, next month down to 2 and 0, switching back and forth. Its the hand to mouth action that those trying to quit have a hard time. I did cut down then went cold turkey after 2 weeks I was pulling out my hair. I did some research and there is a local vape store by my house and went over. I really did help me. Please don't get me wrong, I am not telling someone to turn to vaping, just letting them know there is an option, but do all your research first and go in it, informed.
I personally wont vape outside my home, mine has a medium pink battery on it and i really don't want people up in my business or looking at me funny. Where I live, i see more and more people vaping, its becoming very common now, but for me, its a personal thing.
Cigarettes were costing me about 350 a month. Vaping, 30. So yes you do save a ton of money lol.0 -
I ate more when I quit. It's the hand-to-mouth thing. You aren't used to having nothing to do with your hands and mouth. And it sucks.
Losing weight is harder than quitting the cigarettes...for me, anyway. Smoking, you just stop. It drives you crazy for four days and then it starts getting easier. After a few months, all I had were occasional urges. After a few years, it ended.
Once you're really ready to quit and are honestly committed to doing it, even if it's hard, quitting isn't impossible.
Cutting back on food was harder. You must eat. You can't just stop eating and refuse to do it and be all resolved like you can with smoking. You have to have some, but not too much...it's a pain. Given the choice between doing the two, I'd rather quit smoking and get it over with.
The urges with smoking are worse, at first, though. Way worse. But it's over pretty quick.
Good luck!0 -
I was quit for nearly a year... Now I bum smokes from co-workers so I don't take it home to my son. It's hard. I needed Chantix the first time. I miss the socializing that comes with smoking at work. I can probably still socialize without it... just hard. You'll do it! Hang in there and take it one day at a time. I'll join you!0

For me, quitting smoking made me want to do something.. I often recognized that as being hungry so I ate, but ofcz it wouldn't be satisfying so I would eat more. What I really wanted was nicotine so nothing you can do can satisfy that craving. So you might as well not do anything, be strong and wait it out, because it does pass. I went cold turkey as well, three days were very difficult but after that it gets drastically easier. I wish you good luck!0

Just quit last week (taxes went up again so i just can't afford it anymore). I am vaping but only with the lowest nicotine level.
My taste buds are perking back up, but fortunately (In a weight loss situation) i'm finding some food taste worse than before. My deli turkey was so salty I could not have more than 2 slices and I tried a diet pepsi last night that I threw out because it just tasted nasty to me.
I just stick with my food plan dispite any cravings that may come up. I pre-log so if it it's not on my plan, I'm not eating it.0 -
I quit smoking almost six years ago, I was a two pack a day smoker for too many years to count...I found the only way I could quit was 'cold turkey'. I also read a book called something like "The Easy Way To Quit Smoking", I can't remember the author but it is a quite well known book. It helped me tremendously. I also have a tall bottle of ice water beside me at all times, it helps with the not smoking and with the weight loss. After the first week the majority of the cravings were over...the rest was just habit. I did gain a little bit of weight at first but have since been able to lose 55 pounds.
p.s. Where I live they are starting to regulate e-cigs the same as cigarettes. You can't use them in restaurants, coffee shops, casinos, or anywhere else that people congregate. They are trying to ban them outright. I also have two friends who have become just as addicted to them as they were to cigarettes.
You can quit smoking AND lose weight...you just have to want it more. Good luck...you CAN DO IT.

I quit two months into my weight loss after thirty years. Went cold turkey and here I am a year later (this month), still done with it. Didn't gain a pound. Go get it!0

I am quitting using electronic cigarettes. But it still comes down to calories in calories out, so just be more active if you want to eat more.0

I never really picked up smoking, but I've heard from various sources/friends that sweating will help get the nicotine out of your system faster. A lot of people recommend going to a sauna for a few days in a row, but if you can't afford that just go to the gym and bust it out really hard, take hot showers and hot baths. If you're careful this is one of the few things a body wrap would actually be good for.0

You can make your own zero-nicotine mix for next to nothing using USP vegetable glycerine that you can get at CVS or walmart, a bit of water to thin it and food flavorings. Lorann and Capella's make the best flavors, IMO. It's between $2 and $5 for the vegetable glycerine and it's only a couple bucks for a bottle of flavor that will last a really, really long time. Just for your information, all flavors that you can buy contain vegetable glycerine and/or propylene glycol along with flavors and who knows what else. Mix your own and know for sure what's in it.0

Thanks everyone! I do a little bit of vaping, but just to try and be able to control the hand/mouth movement. My friend mixes his own vape juice with zero nicotine, so I been doing that. I went out last night and managed to only have two drinks and only smoke 2 cigarettes. Usually I would of smoked half a pack and drank 6 or 7 drinks until I could barely lay down cause my head was spinning. It's a slow process, but taking in everything you all have said. Hoping the sweating it out will help. I work in what is practically a sweat shop (not really just I melt metal so it is hot as crazyness and sweat continuously for 8 hours) maybe that will help.0

Actually, the vape only has nicotine if that is the one you buy. I haven't smoked a cigarette in 7 months. I dont really vape anymore either only because my little vape thingy doesnt work... lol. BUT I ONLY bought the liquid for the vape that contained NO NICOTINE. You can get nicotine free or different concentrations of nicotine.
I have gained 40 pounds since I quit smoking. That is why I am here now!0 -
Is it just that you cant buy Nicotine free vape juice in the US? I am in Canada.

I'm not sure if you can buy it or not. My friend makes it and doesn't charge me for it, that's why I don't even try and buy it. So far it isn't affecting my wanting to eat all the time, but I haven't completely quit yet either. Still smoking a few cigarettes here and there.0

Most websites you can order what ever level of nic you want from .24 down to 0 nic.
I use .24 nic because I need it to be like a strong cigarette. I quit for about a year just vaping. Then I lowered my nic level and started smoking again. I am back up to .24 nic now and trying to wean myself off the cigarettes again. That took about 6 months last time.
nicotine in and of itself is only about as harmful as drinking coffee. its the 4,000+ carcinogens in cigarettes that kill you.0
