Hey MFP,
I was wondering if some of you could answer my question and give me some advice.

I have been thinking about starting to eat the frozen Kashi meals for dinner each night. Is this healthy? or Should I just try and make my own meals and freeze them and warm them up later?

Thank you!

:flowerforyou: read the label and you'll see that the sodium is pretty high. You'd do a lot better with home cooked and have the frozen meal only in case of dire emergency.

Frozen dinners can be wonderful in a pinch but you are better off figuring out how to make your own great meals and make them work for you through out the week. ie I roast veggies one night and use them for the next 2-3 days in different applications...one night over quinoa, one day in a quesadilla...one day I mix them in to some veggie crumbles and make a sloppy joe like meal...sometimes I eat them next to a scrambled egg...etc...one night of prep...a few meals.

I live alone and sometimes do not feel like cooking for only me. I eat lean cuisine and healthy choice dinners once in a while. I look at the nutrition info and choose only the one's that are low in cal, fat, carb and sodium, then I add vegetables to them. They are really not bad if you choose the right ones. I have never eaten Kashi. Hope this helps.

Those Kashi dinners are better than others on the market but most of these meals are very high in sodium. Taking in a lot of sodium will have your body retain more water. This is not good if you are looking to drop the pounds.

One of the trainers that I talked to says that Kashi is healthier but cooking a protein, having sweet potatoes and a fruit is gives you more nutrition than those meals.

The kashi meals are actually pretty good compared to many other meals. I would try for a mix of frozen and made-from-scratch frozen - I don't think it's good to get into the habit of all convenience or fast foods, but life sometimes demands quick and easy meals, so if that's the case, the important thing is to go with the healthiest choices.

I'm glad you brought this up. I normally eat them at work for lunch (prefer the Coconut Lemongrass and Red Curry Chicken!). For such a small meal, they are high in carbs and sodium. I did lose 3 pounds this week, and probably had a Kashi meal for lunch about 4 out of 5 days, so I can say for a fact that they aren't hindering weight loss. However, I do drink lots of water and exercise every day to try and make up for this. Sorry, I can't give much advice past that, because it would not really be fact based, and I don't want to give you inaccurate information. Hopefully someone else can provide more insight.

Well I eat them often as well as Amy's organic and health choice steamers. I love them. I'm vegetarian and my husband is a meatatariian so we eat very different foods. So I don't do much cooking at all. I've lost weight eating them the sodium maybe high but I just drink an extra glass of water or 2. So go for it.

Have a look at Hungry Girl's website. She has some great advice about how to bulk up frozen meals so you're satisfied. And watch the sodium!

There's definitely a place for a few frozen meals, but I wouldn't make it a dialy event. I always have a few Lean Cuisines in the freezer for days I've waited too long to eat or that I'm just so unbelievably bored with what I've made and have waiting that I can't even think of eating it.

But I wouldn't eat them daily at this point. too processed and too much sodium in them, even in the better brands like Kashi.

I tend to cook a LOT of chicken breasts early in the week and then use those for quick meals throughout the week. If you eat pasta or rice, those are other staples that you can make in advance and just reheat throughout the week.
