How do you log? When do you calculate your calories?

I'm curious to see how most people log their food on MFP. For me...I don't put a morsel of food into my mouth until I know how many calories it is. Most of the time, I know down to the calorie & I log it before I eat it or almost immediately after on my iPhone. If I haven't prepared the food myself, I search through the food database for a reasonable similar food before I eat. I have a general plan for each day and every piece of food that enters my body is part of the overall plan for the day. If I can't estimate calorie content, I pass on that food for the next item that I can estimate.
I have seen posts like, ooops, I ate that & logged later & didn't know it was 4 times as many calories as I thought. I just cannot understand that. It would kill me to eat something if I wasn't reasonably sure of the calorie content. Am I making sense? Anyone else like me?
How do you calculate and log your calories for both food you prepare as well as food you don't?

I log everything in the morning while I have my cup of coffee, sometimes the night before. I can always edit as I go, but it is better for me to have a plan of action for the day!0

i log after i eat because my aim here isn't so much to lose weight, it's more of learning how to eat without having to log. so i'm learning what x-calories looks like / is roughly so that i can just keep track in my head eventually.
so i log as i eat or after i eat, but i exercise a LOT so i don't worry so much about it.
edit: i shouldn't say i'm not here to lose weight - of course i am, but the losing weight part is more of a bonus to what my first aim is, and that's to be healthy.0 -
95% of the time I log my food for the whole day. The other 5% is for when we eat at other people's homes.0

Many days I will eat and have a 'normal' day until around 2-4pm. I try to consume around 500-700 calories during the day prior 4pm. A lot of the things I eat I have memorized how many cals they are, and I can remember them easily and just log them in when I visit the site. There are few things where I will write down what it is on a slip of paper, and look it up later.
The evenings I will do a workout, then try my best to figure out what to eat to fill the remaining 700-900 calories. Usually a nice full dinner with a dessert.0 -
I'm trying to make a lifestyle change that I can live with that will help me loose, so I log as I go. I know I'm not going to spend my life planning all my food in advance, so I'm not doing that now. But I am buying healthy stuff so that when I go to look for something to eat, there are healthy choices in the house. The rest of my family (husband, 2 teenage boys) are eating "regular" food so I have "regular" food too - just healthier versions and less of it.
As to healthier versions: they're getting the benefit too by me modeling good choices and helping them learn to pay attention to what they're eating. Hopefully my boys won't struggle with their weight their whole life like I have.0 -
I always log mine in the morning the things I know I'm going to eat. But you must realize there are going to be times that you are not going to be able to stick to your plan, emergencies etc. I wouldn't not eat just because i don't know the calories count I know when my husband was alive I was days at the hospital with him but I was not going to wait for 3 days until I got home to eat. You need to pick and choose and live with it. One day or one meal will not ambush you0

I have a (flexible) meal plan set out over 4 weeks. This means I can usually log each morning what I have planned for that night. If I've taken my lunch with me to work, then I can log pretty much the whole day shortly after eating breakfast.
This way, I know how much I have left over for snacks, and what intensity exercise I need to do (sometimes I'm over goal even before I've tucked into lunch, in terms of what's logged).0 -
Every morning I plan out my food for the entire day. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. If I don't do that, I always end up losing track and over eating. Since I know the calorie range I will be burning for the day (thank you HRM!) I can always tweak my food if need be.0

I try and do it either prior to eating or soon after...as long as I am home, if I am out with my daughters and we decide at the last minute to eat out I try and pick the healthiest option but sometimes it turns out to no be that healthy. So yeah I am one of those people that you had mentioned that will log my food later on after eating out and look at the calorie count and go "What the heck???!!!!" and I learn not to get that again.0

I've been here since 2007 so I pretty much know how much everything is before I eat it, but I don't usually log it until after I've eaten it because I'll often change my mind while I'm cooking the meal! I'm not good at deciding ahead of time what I'm going to throw in the pan. It's a creative process.
I mainly log now to be able to go back and do comparisons or progress reports etc.
I used to really get tired of logging food, but it is a quick process for me now that I've got all my favorite foods in the database and I can log a meal in two minutes or less.0 -

If you're out and get something to eat and don't have a cell phone with the app on it, it's very hard to guess at the calorie count when you are eating out or at an event or something. So you just have to take a guess on what you think is the healthiest and go from there.0 -
Am I making sense? Anyone else like me?
Before using this site, in fact before the internet even, I used to carry a calorie book, and log calories on a pad of forms I'd printed up. These days, I use the app on my phone, and it's SO convenient it's not true, especially with the bar code scanner.
I don't plan my full day's meals in advance, but neither do I have much unhealthy stuff in the house, so decisions don't have to be made in advance - I just pick food that I already have that fits with how that day's gone so far - i.e.
1. how much it will fill me up
2. how long I have left to cook,
3, how many calories I have left
and
4. whether anything's about to go off and needs using up!0 -
I TRY to log everything BEFORE it goes into my mouth (I create all my own recipes in advance and base my diary on these recipes) ... still I find I can't always do this.
For example, I don't know what my mother-in-law puts in her dishes so I don't even bother to log those days ... however, that said, and as much as possible, I avoid having meals at my in-laws.
Another exception to the rule are my cheat days ... sometimes but not always ... depends on how dirty my cheat day is! On really dirty cheat days I don't always bother logging my foods because I don't want to have to deal with the feelings of guilt that are oftentimes associated to cheating, as guilt is counterproductive. On these days I'd rather eat mindlessly and enjoy it knowing with great certainty I'll be back on track the next day.
Another exception occurs when, in spite of logging my entire day in advance and then posting it, I deviate from my original entries and have to go back and re-log to make sure my food diary accurately reflects my intake. This might happen as a result of a super busy day outside the home. Sometimes I think I'm only going to be a couple hours and might find myself gone an entire day. And because I didn't pack my foods (thinking I wouldn't be so long) I grab something I had not planned on ... almost always healthy, but definitely not pre-planned and accounted for. I try not to do this very often, but it does happen on occasion.
Too, I once created a recipe and ate it prior to logging it into the program only to discover AFTERWARDS it contained far more calories, carbs, fat, sugar, sodium, etc., than I originally thought. Unfortunately it took repeating this mistake twice before I learned ... thankfully, however, I learned!!
Finally, there are days when I complete my food diary earlier in the day but find much later in the day I'm still hungry, and because I have ample calories left I eat more and have to 'add' to my diary and recalculate.0 -
On weekdays I usually log in most of my food the night before since I pretty much have the same things for breakfast and lunch. I find that helpful because that gives me an idea of how many calories I'll have to play with for snacks and dinner and can plan accordingly. On weekends I'll log in the food before I eat it, or if I'm out just write it down in a small notepad to add to the diary later (I don't have a smartphone).0

I log as I go, mostly because I never know if I'm really going to eat the whole meal. There as some days I just can't. I do check nutrition info before I plan out a meal, though, so I know what I'm getting into and can figure out the best portion size. I pretty much eat a variation of the same thing every day, now, so I generally know how much I'm eating without pre-logging.
I have started checking before I go out to eat, though, so I don't blow my whole day.0 -
I've been kind of logging as I go. For example I had a cup of fresh blueberrys for a snack and then put them in the log. I figured they wouldn't be that bad. But if I wanted something that I question I check it out beforehand and go from there. So, I do a little of both.0

I plan out each day in the morning, before breakfast, so I know where I stand. Sometimes it changes, but I always have an 'idea' of where I am calorie-wise all through the day (update on my Android phone if necessary).0

Hi. I just joined today. I can't even figure out where to write my food. Do you calculate it on your own and then just write the total or what? It's probably easy but I DON'T GET IT.0

At the tabs at the top of your page next to where it says "My Fitness Pal," go to the tab that says "Food." That brings you right to your food diary.0 -
I have a piece of scrap paper that I keep in my kitchen and fill out the weights of everything I eat. I have only been here for a little over 2 months but I eat a lot of repeat things so I pretty much know the range of calories of what I'm eating. That said I log dinner right after I eat it so I know how many calories I have left. My breakfast is pretty standard as is my lunch which I log as soon as I make it. I always look at the portions when I fix my dinner since what I'm trying to learn is portion control. I'm trying to eat the same things as my family but making sure I don't eat more than I should. If I'm going out to a restaurant I look it up before I go so I already know what I'm ordering. I went for Anniversary dinner last weekend and I looked up more or less what the total would be so I knew what range of calories I needed and what I would have left for the earlier part of the day. Considering that I only have 1200 calories to begin with I have to be careful but most times I end up with calories left. I have been lucky that the few activities I've gone the items offered have been stuff easy to find the calorie content or stuff I already know what it will be.

If it's a new recipe or I'm at a restaurant I log things in before I eat so I have no surprises. The rest of the time I have a pretty good idea what each meal will be because I've eaten them enough times before.0
