Will It Work?

A lady at my gym was saying she cut bread and sugar and lost two pounds in a week. I'm barely hitting the one pound mark right now, I'd like to be losing over one and closer to 1.5 because I want to lose another 15 lbs before I start college in September. Any suggestions?

Cut sugar definitely.
Cutting bread, why not? You don't really need bread in your diet.0 -
cutting sugar and refined grains (white breads for example) will be beneficial to your health. If they make up a large portion of your daily intake rigt now then it should make a big difference!0

I do not eat sugar and very little bread. I am losing 2-3 pounds a week. My rule is do not eat anything white: white sugar, white bread, white potatoes, etc.0

Two pounds a week is exceptionally hard to do. My advice is to do an exercise program like P90x or Turbofire, and cut out all processed food and simple carbs. That means cutting way back on any refined sugars (fruit is OK, cake is not), white bread, pasta and rice. Stick with whole grains like oats, whole grain pastas and breads but don't go overboard on these either. Make water your only go-to beverage. Good luck!0

My friend went on a diet that required her to cut bread. She took bread of everything and lots a good bit of weight but ofcourse as soon as she stopped she gained it back.0

Do you have to buy organic to stay away from processed foods? I am really trying to lower my sodium intake. It is outrageous right now.0 -

No, just stay away from things in cans or boxes. Someone's signature has a really good suggestion, just shop on the outer perimeter of the store, where the produce, meat, and dairy is. All the stuff in the inside isles is pretty much crap.0 -
I can tell you that I loose on average 1 1/2 to 2 pounds per week but that is tough. I don't eat a lot of sugars (they tend to actually make me feel hungrier) but I do eat the occasional bread, rice, or potato. I am very conscious on portion sizing. Most of the time I have a protein shake for breakfast and one for lunch with snacks & then a healthy dinner (lots of green veggies too). I work out typically 5 days per week, fairly intensely. The key is creating habits/ routines that you will be able to stick with long term. If you don't you'll just loose-gain-loose- etc. which wrecks your metabolism. Feel free to friend me. You can do it though; wishing you the best!0

I wrote a topic on the starvation mode theory, it talks about how carbs(breads) affect your biochemistry. It's called something like "why starvation mode affects some and not others" or something like that, you can search for it if you're interested.
Most of the above post are pretty good, limit carbs will help reduce weight. LIke someone said about their friend, once they started eating breads again they gained it back. The key here is... ask yourself "can i do this for the rest of my life?" if you can't don't do it, change your approach. Carbs shouldn't be cut out of the diet, they should be limited it. Your brain runs on carbs. If you can't get carbs from your diet, it will get it from protein, if you don't eat a ton of protein which can be toxic to the body, it will get it from your muscle mass lowering your metabolic rate.0 -

Yes, it helps. Try to get the majority of your carbs from veggies first, some fruit. Your blood sugars will be more stable and if you replace those carbs with protein, you'll feel fuller longer.
You don't necessarily have to cut out ALL bread and sugar. Limit them both and get fiber with it when you can. I don't consider my diet to be particularly 'low carb', but I keep my carbs around 100 a day.0 -

No, just buy fresh fruits and veggies. Think, "Can I grow this in my backyard?" Broccoli? Yes. Apple? Yes. Frozen Lean Cuisine dinner? No.0 -

That cracked me up. Now I am picturing a Lean Cuisine bush.0 -

That's a good perspective on which foods to buy. Also the "shop outside the isle" idea. That's what i go by, I rarely go in the isles. It's all junk. Unless I buy something like peanut butter. Fruits and vegetables and meats are outside the isles.0 -
Dieting is a bad concept, the first 3 letters are die. If you want to live then consider the following: What works is changing your lifestyle of eating and activity. To say you are never going to eat a particular thing - especially something you really enjoy is not a smart approach. The idea is to do this nutrition and exercise thing in a way that you can live with. One of the best and balanced plans I know of in www.mypyramid.gov You simply plug in your weight and age and it will give you a calorie level for you to get to a safe weight. All the competent literature out there on weight loss says 1 - 2 pounds a week is about all you can safely lose and keep it off. If you follow the plan on the website listed then you will lose weight. Not only that but you also have to move your body - if you can tolerate the high energy gyrations mentioned by others and it is something you can do for life - then go for it. But if you think you might need to consider something a little more conservative - then considering walking, biking, or swimming. By the way you do need bread - it should mostly be whole grain. Bread is the only way that you will get some vitamins and minerals. I speak from experience - unfortunately I have lost weight numerous times by following many fad type diets. The one thing I hope you take from this is balance, variety and consistency. That will work!0

She can get all those "lost" vitamins and minerals in other grains. It doesn't have to be in the form of bread. Some parts of the U.S. don't have certain minerals in the soil in any great amount, but may have an abundance of other minerals. There are many ways to skin a cat, and I have also done well by eliminating MOST bread, and the grains I do have I have to cook them, not just eat them from a bag or a box like cereal, bread, and crackers. The fact that bread can be a go-to snack item in and of itself can make it a trigger food. I know that's true for me.
You can have too much 100% whole wheat bread, Triscuit crackers, Kashi cereal, etc. For me, not having loaves of bread or boxes of crackers or cereal in the house is critical to maintaining my disipline. Of course, I live alone, so I have to be very careful of my bad habits - no one to watch over me0 -
Cutting out bread and refined sugars and flours worked for me. In fact, I try to limit gluten (wheat products/flours) as much possible because many people have a hard time processing it.0

Personally, I don't understand how to cut out bread entirely. How would I make a sandwich without bread?0
