So it seems that I've reached the fullest potential of the rotary calf machine. Are there any good calf exercises that can be done with free weights (especially for my balance challenged self)?

Also, I'm wondering if anyone has any fun core exercises they do? I love planks and side planks, but I despise crunches, especially since I can't seem to do them without straining my neck.

I do standing crunches with my aerobic classes and they love them. Knee to elbow, knee to opposite elbow. air boxing across the body, sliding the hand to the knee and the side of the knee to tap into those sides. Just remember, you have to isolate the bottom by squeezing it tight.

I'm not much help on the calf exercises.

However, as you mentioned that your balance and your core are both issues, have you considered taking Yoga classes? You'll get a lot of core exercise as well as improving your balance. The moves are slow and controlled so you aren't likely to fall over and hurt yourself.

Find the biggest dude in your gym and ask him to help you do donkey calves raises.

First, Schwiggity you've done an awesome job so far with your transformation.

P90x has a few I can think of.
    Calf raises with weights.
Hop on one foot for 30 secs, switch foot.
Sets of 10 lunges while on your toes

Look up Ab ripper X for some examples on you tube.
..I used to have that strain feeling sometimes in my neck as well. I heard I was doing them wrong.
Now I try to do an ab crunch, fingers are behind my head, but don't try to pull your head to your toes.
instead, try to lift your shoulders to the ceiling, and tighten up the abs.

    Hope that helps.
