Does anyone practice yoga?

Hi,
I was thinking of giving yoga a go, I just wondered if anyone here does it and what you think of it.
I started pilates months ago and really love it. People often talk about yoga and pilates together as if they are similar but I just don't know much about yoga.
Thanks in advance,
Laura

I've just started doing Bikram Yoga. It's done in a really hot (40 degrees celcius) and humid room. It's 90 minutes long and I felt sore ALL OVER the first time I did it. I wear a heart rate monitor and today I burnt 558 calories - and I'm just a beginner!
Not sure how it compares with other, more meditative forms of yoga, but so far I'm pretty happy
Will be interesting to hear other people's experiences...0 -
I love yoga. It builds strength and flexibility. It is also very calming. Kind of like a weekly reset for me. I do hatha and ashungta (?) yoga.0

I'm doing the 90-minute P90X Yoga video for the first time tomorrow, so I'm hoping it will be awesome. I've heard it can be pretty intense! If it's anything like these four other P90X videos I've tried, then it's going to be really fun and super demanding! Good luck!0

I have done yoga on and off for over ten years, I think it's the best exercise to make your body last a life time.
It will take a long time to lose weight with it if that's your only exercise though, that's why I do more fitness DVD's and running now, but I still love yoga for a chill out workout and I always feel great after doing it!!
I reckon you should try it, it's great.0 -
I have just started. I am doing it once per week. The first time I did it, I was really sore the next day...which surprised me.
I like it, but I am a "no pain no gain" kind of girl. So mentally, since I am not sweating, I am having a hard time believing that it works and is worthwhile. I'll give it some time.0 -
Thanks for all the responses! I'll def give it a go0

I've practiced yoga for about 28 years. I was just entering it into my exercise list (this is my first week here) and was disappointed to see that I could not add it as a strength training exercise, as it doesn't have sets/repetitions. So I stuck it under cardio, even though it's more strength-building.
I did a google search for "how many calories do I burn doing yoga?" and got several hits. I finally found one that gave an estimate for 1 hour of hatha yoga, depending on your weight, so I chose the # of calories for the weight closest to mine, which is 280 calories. Not too bad, IMO, considering all the other benefits of yoga.0 -
YES!
Yoga is brilliant.
I'm stronger, bendier and calmer for doing it, I love it0 -

What kind of yoga are you doing? I always sweat a lot when I do yoga and my muscles really feel the burn. I used to exclusively be a gym rat until I discovered yoga a few years ago. Try vinyasa or power yoga. Those are usually more rigorous than your standard hatha yoga. Your arms, legs, core, shoulders, back will all feel the burn! If you like to practice at home check out Sean Corne, Baron Baptiste, Rodney Yee or Sadie Nardini. All are wonderful instructors! Sadie Nardini lost 40 lbs doing yoga and so her yoga style (core strength) really is designed to get our bodies into optimal shape like she was able to do.0 -
A good friend of mine is a certified yoga instructor. I go to him for a private class once a week, schedule permitting.
It's not a super calorie burner but it's great for building core strength and balance.
And depending on the instructor (mine is amazing) it can be a huge stress relief and a much needed zen experience.0
