I'm kinda weirded out right now. I just got done jogging 6 miles today and I got a whiff of my drenched shirt, and it smelt like I took a bath in windex! Just wreaks off ammonia, it burns my nose any everything. It's gotta be something to do with my recent change in diet (lowered carbs & high protein) or dramatic cardio increase but I've gotta do some research online yet. I ate more protein a day then this in the past, so I'm leaning towards the cardio.

Anyone else ever notice this? (You would definitely notice)

I don't know the accuracy of this website but here is an article about it on bodybuilding.com.

What is the breakdown of your diet ?
    • Protein
    • Fat
    • Carbohydrate

It could be that your protein levels are too high.

There have actually been several posts about this issue recently, and most seem to point in this direction.

Yes! I've only experienced that on long runs in hot weather. My husband has too. And the dried salt/minerals on the clothing at the same time. LOL. Ah the things we learn!

On a typical day my macro ranges are :

    Protein: 170-200g
    Carbs: <160g
    Fats: 100-150g

Like I said I have done this diet before with out issues. After some reading online I think it could be due to Insufficient water intake/ and or to much caffeine leading to dehydration.

If youre on a keto diet, your body could be going into ketosis. Results in you being pretty smelly as well as some nasty side effects for your organs.

Ketosis causes a sweet-ish smell. Not ammonia like... As far as I know or have experienced.

Could be related to your diet but Not always. Instead, this may be due to a lack of water OR if you are taking a specific pre workout. I've experienced this before. Keep hydrated and assess what you're taking before workouts, if anything at all :)

You should start taking some raspberry ketones, just in case.

Did your cat pee on your shirt before you put it on this morning?

I've noticed this at times very rarely...well ONCE really. Unsure why it happened. Freaked me out too though, but then it passed.

I gotta say though no matter what kind of smell I have ever noticed or when, my MO is always the same. Thorough shower and drink lots of water.

This worked for this just as it works on post asparagus peepee weirdness, after nightclub smoke-in-the-hair musties, way too much starbucks breath, and cooking-with-raw-garlic hands.

Hope it never happens again it was alarming but the dehydration replies make sense with what my body was going through at the time.

    *SPOILER ALERT*

I was going to say the keto as well...when I go super low carb or full keto I get funny smells.

I don't smell fruity or acetone like in dka, or ammonia exactly either. Not quite like body odor, not quite like yeast, not quite like vinegar, just not quite right.

Excess protein -> urea and ammonia. 200 grams is OTT.

For the record, I adjusted my water and morning caffeine intake, sweat seems to be odorless after my jog today. Only did 3 miles and it wasn't nearly as hot as yesterday though. But I noticed my side stitches wernt nearly as bad today too...

Maybe I should just give up the caffeine, my caffeine consumption is somewhat ridiculous lately, thanks to chocolate-whey-iced-coffee's. I consume on average 2/3 cup - 1cup ground coffee / day (1-2 pots worth).

I get ammonia smells when training HARD. Like above 88% HR. So I get smelly when doing HIT sprinting. Hasn't harmed me yet. No organ failure here.

I notice this smell sometimes in the weight room too, even in AC gym. Which would contradict the theory in the BB article. Or did those muscle men suddenly turn into glycogen depleted cardiocrazies?

Sometimes, like now in summer, that ammonia whiff comes from someone on the bus... Maybe it's just a byproduct of sweating within certain parameters. Sometimes sweat stinks, sometimes it doesn't.

Remember to wash those clothes with a corkscrew of plain vinegar now and then. It removes the sour workout smell :)

    Edit: inserted in bold.

    Burning off glycogen

I could smell amonia slightly after this ride today

But it was 2 hard effort hours, 40 miles at a fast pace. Burnt out all my glycogen and some body fat.

I get this sometimes, but oddly enough, once I dry off you can't smell it anymore. I go back to smelling like my body wash and my clothes go back to smelling like my laundry detergent. I thought I must be imagining things and it was wishful thinking that I didn't stink, but my brave (and exceedingly honest) co-worker took a big whiff of me once I was dry and said she couldn't smell anything but strawberries and cold water Tide. lol

All three of my sibling's sweat, would smell like rusting metal; when they were children & were active, they aren't as active as adults though; so no smell currently. Until I was 22, I always smelled like flowers, when I'd sweat; which was rare in of itself since I am usually cold. I didn't even have to wear deodorant until I was 22 either but I don't recall ever smelling an ammonia smell, on a person before.

Not in general sweating, but I get the ammonia smell often too after a hard workout at the gym.

Bro, I can smell the ammonia here in Wisconsin from that ride! Lol that makes sense though, with the body fat and glycogen. I'm pushing myself while running harder than I ever have before in my life. I'm eager to lean out quickly so I can start bulking again. I run until I'm dam near ready to collapse from exhaustion.
