Before or after dinner?

I have been walking about 2 miles every night after dinner. My question is this: is it more effective (or just better in general) to exercise before or after dinner. I do wait about an hour after I eat.

I have heard arguments for both sides but I wanted to get the MFP community's opinion on it as well. Or maybe it doesn't really matter.

I have been told that it doesn't really matter. What matters is burning the amount of calories you consume. What matters is WHAT you eat and how much of it. We usually do a hard walk/jog/workout in the early morning, and then a leisurely walk after dinner. But, I don't know what the health experts or nutritionalists say about this. They all have different opinions and it's hard to figure out which one is right!

I always walk before dinner. You get easier tired if you haven't eaten properly, at least that's my problem.

I know they say you should work out in the morning since it'll keep your metabolism up all day.

Well. I'm not a morning person. And I figure working out at night when I'm awake and have more energy works just as well.

So, I don't know that it really matters when you do it -- as long as you do it. :)
  • you can go both ways, just be sure that if you choose to go after, you allow adequate time, 30 or so minutes for the food to digest, but as far as it being more effective before or after, no difference reported.
