You are misunderstanding this quote. Eat less means eat less than you normally eat. Exercise more means exercise more than you normally do. It doesn't mean to eat less calories than you burn.
Yeah but if I eat 1200 calories I feel like I'm going to put more weight on and I don't know what I would do then
Then you should seek professional help. 1200 calories is REALLY low. I'm on a 1200 calorie intake and a lot of people have told me that even THAT is too low... it's not for me, but that's beside the point.
You NEED at least 1200 calories. If you can't get that many you might have an eating disorder.
around 2000 is usually considered maintenance for a healthy weight. Any less than that is almost assuredly going to be a deficit, especially if you're already overweight.
Eating less that 1000 calories is extremely dangerous behavior. You're NOT going to gain weight by eating 1200 calories unless you are already so skinny that it's unhealthy and just can't see it. I would highly recommend speaking with your physician before continuing on your weight loss journey.
Okay I'll go and talk to my doctor as in my head 1200 calories is a lot and I don't know if I'll be able to eat that much ! Thank you for pointing that out sometimes you need someone to tell you what you can't see you know
Good for you! Most of the time when people suggest this people get really defensive. Glad to see that you want to be healthy and are willing to take advice!

1200 calories is a lot for a six-year-old, but not an adult.0

Ahhh thank you so much0 -
OP, you seem confused about how burning calories works. Your body naturally burns over 2,000 (assuming the numbers you gave on here are accurate and your MFP account is set to sedentary) calories each day. Those are calories you will burn if you are just sitting on the couch doing nothing. Your body is doing a lot of stuff even if you aren't moving (breathing, keeping your heart beating, brain functioning, etc.) Everything requires energy, and that energy comes from calories. If you exercise, then you add to that total. I use a fitness tracker and it says I end up burning around 3,000 each day. Since I want to lose 2 lbs a week, I eat a bit under 2,000. You'll be surprised at how much you can eat and still lose weight.
If you're trying for 2 lbs a week (which I agree is a bit too aggressive for you based on your weight but whatevs) then you want total (calories burned)-(calories consumed) to equal 1,000. MFP is already doing that for you with the number that it says is "remaining" in your diary. That number is your projected calories burned that day minus the deficit you requested to meet your goal. Eat ALL of those calories and log your exercise. Exercise calories=more calories for you to eat. You should avoid if at all possible going under 1,200 total calories consumed a day without doctor supervision (like a physician-sponsored weight-loss program, not just regular doctor visits) and should NEVER eat fewer than 800 a day. 800 is the minimum for your body to function. Honestly, I prefer to eat at least 1,500 a day because I feel better when I do but I do have to add exercise to make my deficit.0 -
CaitlinW19 wrote: »You burn a certain number of calories per day just being alive...even if you didn't get out of bed in a day, that number is usually something like 1,500 calories (varries based on a lot of things including weight, gender, etc. that MFP takes into consideration). So, assuming you don't lay in bed all day, let's say your magic number is 1,800 calories to MAINTAIN.
You select to lose 1 pound a week. 1 lb is about 3,500 calories...that's how many extra a week you'd need to eat to gain a pound a week and it's how many should be subtracted from your week to lose a pound a week.
1,800 calories seven days a week is 12,600 calories (again to maintain current weight)
12,600 minus 3,500 = 9,100 (what you'd eat per week to lose 1 lb)
9,100 divided by 7 days = 1300 calories a day is what you should eat
MFP automaticly does that math for you to help you eat the number of calories you should eat to meet your weekly weight loss goal. For some people, that daily number is a lot higher, but no one is recomended to eat less than 1,200 calories a day without the supervision of a doctor.
Umm what would happen if I went under 9000 a week as last week I got up to 5416 for a whole week0 -

I don't know you, I don't know your whole story, but if you were my sister or someone I loved, I'd sit you down and tell you very supportively but firmly:
If you are having anxiety and depression issues, the last thing you want to do is make it worse by starving your brain of the essential ingredients it needs to heal itself and function properly. Vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, amino acids, lipids... all of these are required for a fully functional brain.
-Not enough lipids? (fats) Then your endocrine (hormone) system won't function correctly.
-Not enough carbohydrates? Well, this one is more controversial, but low carbs could be good or bad for your specific brain. Hard to say, trust your doctors.
-Not enough vitamins and minerals? Your brain cells won't have the building blocks and co-factors they need to fire and recover correctly, and then repair when there's damage.
-Not enough amino acids? Basically all of the above, plus you start to get weak from your body canibalizing your skeletal muscles to feed the basic needs of your heart beats and breathing.
If you aren't eating that ~9000 calories per week, you are not helping your brain. Love your brain, eat some more.0 -

Nothing good. Your basic body functions need calories to function...your heart, lungs, liver, brain. If you deprive yourself of too much that is really dangerous and, ultimately, not worth any results you might see on the scale...what good would those be if you were dead? Sadly for us all, weight loss is a "slow and steady wins the race" thing. Some people don't even lose weight if they eat too few calories (I know, seems counter intuitive). It's just not worth it. 1,200 calories a day is not very much. If it seems like a lot, you might need to evaluate what you are eating...there should be some more calorie dense food in your diet if you are having trouble reaching that number at a minimum.
Dont' get me wrong...you haven't killed your organs or anything eating that low last week...it would just be really dangerous to continue on that path. Now you know better and can make healthier choices :-) You'll figure it out and I'm glad you are going to touch base with your doctor.0 -
