Health Nut Hypocrite:

Hey everyone! I'm new here and am trying to find a way to not forget to find the time to log what I eat. This site does make things a lot easier and less complicated, plus it counts calories for you!
I'm hopeful to finally find a way to end overeating. You see, I'm a health nut, I hate bacon burgers, Mc Donalds, funnel cake, ect. and I really like veggies, salads with no dressing or cheese, whole grains, and I also run all the time for fun.
But here's my problem, I eat WAAAAYYY too much of what I do eat. I can eat an entire whole grain baguette, yogert, bananas, chocolate milk, then ice cream, and still feel like eating! I've gained 20lbs over the holidays, and still haven't taken it off...any tips, pointers, or anyone who can relate to my weakness? Help would be appreciated!

The biggest thing is to eat consciously. Most of the time when we over eat, we're thinking about other things and don't pay attention to how much we're actually putting away. Serve yourself reasonable servings and put the rest away (or at least off the table) before you eat. Then eat slowly, thinking about what you're eating and savoring every bite. Don't read or watch tv during meals.
You'll feel satisfied with less food, meaning that you'll curb your calorie intake. Also drink plenty of water, it can help fill some of the space and add more time to your eating.0 -

I am also guilty of eating too much good stuff. Plus ice cream. Ice cream has been my kryptonite in the past, although I feel like I've got it pretty well managed now (mainly by not keeping it in the house, really and making sure to get some out in the world once in a while). MFP is great for a reality check of how much food is reasonable and sensible even when it IS all healthy stuff. Welcome!0

Eat sloooooowly. I have the same problem. Wolf everything down before I even realise I'm full. I started by chewing every bite 50 times. I know that sounds silly, but it DOES slow you down and make you think about what you're eating.0

Hi, I would suggest filling up more on veggies, which have a lot of fiber but are low-caloric. Almost all the things you mentioned are loaded with carbs or sugars (I'm guessing the yogurt might be sugary too) - and the more sugars/refined carbs you eat, the more you will crave them, and it will become an ugly addiction. Try to consume less of those foods, and eat more things like unsalted nuts and veggies which will fill you up for much longer.0

I'm guilty of the same thing. I don't like sweets, fried foods, etc., but I can easily overeat on things like raw nuts, veggies with raw nut butter, whole grains, avocados, etc. It helps me to drink a full glass of water and fill up on veggies or salad before I eat other foods. And I use the food diary to help me keep track of how much I eat more than what I eat.0

often people mistake hunger for thirst....I know i did and plus i would eat out of boredom.... i had learn to eat slower too. sometimes it can take up to 20 minutes for our brain to catch up to our stomach...0

Yeah, I have that issue as well. I generally only buy the foods that I want to eat anyway so nothing that is terribly bad for me. Then I can have issues just having a portion of nuts for example. I have stopped buying cashews because of this!
All of the suggestions make sense though:
plan ahead
drink sufficient water
eat slowly
And I do the clench your fist thing and think. This is the size of my stomach. Why should I need to fill it with twice or three times that size? :P0 -
Plan ahead
Absolutely. Not only is it good for your health it makes life simpler.0 -
Oh wow, thank you all for your help! It's very supportive to know do many people are here!
I always drink a lot of water, and don't usually eat too much, but the willpower I lose sometime in the evening...almost every evening.
But I think this site will be good for accountability as well! I also like the example that the stomach is not very big, and doesn't need a boat load of food to fill it up.0
