Easy cruising date run with my wife today, very pleasant.

Watched last night on youtube a run video of one participant's experience in a 120 mile mountain ultra held here in British Columbia -- the Fat Dog 120. Should I be worried about my sanity that I find this cool and inspiring?

    7/8 5.5 @ 11:42 treadmill
    7/9 6.5 @ 11:41 treadmill
    7/10 3 @ 10:47 treadmill (good time for me!)
    7/11 2.5 @ 12:54

7/13 3.5 @ 11:55/15 splits (half was walking with friends)
    7/14 3.75 @ 12:40 treadmill
    7/15 6.25 @ 13:40
    7/16 2 @ 15:00 (walking with friends)

    7/20 5.25 @ 11:57 treadmill
    7/21 3.5 @ 12:12 treadmill
7/22 7.25 @ 13:54 (my fastest mile was 12:51--on a blacktop path. The gravel felt especially loose today, otherwise...or maybe it was just me, lol.)
7/23 1.5 on the treadmill @ 13:00 ; I was in so much pain...so I went swimming after doing arms. Felt much better!
    7/24 4.5 @ 12:29 (a good time outdoors for me!)
7/25 3.5 @ 12:03 --an experiment running outdoors on pavement vs. the normal gravel lake run. I was definitely faster! But my trail shoes were also completely insufficient and my arches were quite painful by the end of the run and into Sunday (a rest day). Today I got new inserts for the trail shoes, but I won't make the mistake of wearing them on pavement again!

7/27 3.5 at 10:55 on the treadmill, since it was really muggy/rainy this am!

    89/100 for the month

@5BeautifulDays Mighty fast on that treadmill today! Rest days are great for that. How are your arches?
@mwyvr - Checked out FatDog120. From the website- "How difficult is 120 mile? Just short of Everest for elevation gain. Fat Dog 120 mile is 8672.7 m, Everest 8848 m." Oh yeah.... I'm seriously impressed. Very cool and inspiring!
@autumnblade75 , @briebee7 and @WhatMeRunning You are all rocking it! Watch out, it will be time for new sneaks before you know it!
@RunTimer Yes, make sure that catcher has no worries of a bat hitting the side of his head!
@mandync5497 Yes, you can make that goal! 4 more days, go gett'em!!
@backtofit68 75 miles post back surgery just 4 months ago! You're your surgeon's stellar patient!

Hey kiddos, the ticker is back up and running!

    hi all,

Sorry to hijack the post as strictly speaking i haven't set a goal for July so am not part of this but I really want to start running a bit more seriously and wondered if any of you experienced guys/gals have any tips on how to start out, what kind of distances, number of times a week and tips for success

At present I can manage 5k and do this twice a week on a treadmill which I realise is easier than running outside, would like to build up from that. Is it just as easy as doing more than twice a week? Or should I be trying to mix it up i.e try for 10k one day and then 5k another?

I don't feel burn muscle wise when running its more of a out of breath feeling that makes me slow down so I am guessing (and it is a guess as i am no expert) that I lack cardio fitness rather than muscle strength

Anyway any tips and advice from those more clued up than myself would be well received.

    Cheers all

@lewissheldon125 First off, Welcome! You came to the right place. Stick around and join us. I will post the August link in this thread within the next couple of days.

Consistentency and slowly build miles is the best way to do it. The best way to do it is whatever is going to keep you doing it every week. The people in here are friendly and very helpful and we all encourage each other and keep each of us accountable to each other. Plus it's fun.

I would suggest trying 5K 3x a week and stay consistent with that for a while. Eventually you will want to make one of those runs your long run so after you are consistent with 5K 3x a week. You can try 10K on one those days.

However, I myself (and many others) find it a struggle to go more than 3 or 4 miles on a treadmill. Maybe a Saturday morning or whatever day works best for you get out in the park and run 4 or 5 miles outside at a nice slow easy pace. Since you are just starting, the key is to keep all the running at what we call a "conversational pace". That means you should be able to hold a conversation and speak in complete sentences while running without worrying about breathing too hard. If you have to stop in a sentence to catch your breath, then you are running too fast. If you are running a lone, you should be able to recite your ABC's or sing a song out loud the same way.

    Good luck!!

    Stan

They felt much better by Monday morning, thank you!

I was pretty excited by that time, too. :) I did a mile and a quarter at 6.0 (divided into two segments). I'm trying to work up to a 30-minute 5K. Obviously not there yet, but I thought sub-36 was impossible a couple months ago!

3 1/2 days left (today's not over yet!) and exceeded my goal! Makes me happy. And a little scared of the new mindset. :)

Excellent. Thanks for the feedback, I thought slow and steady increase might be the best way to start. Ill keep an eye out for the August link and set myself a modest goal. Is there any way of making this thread a favourite so i don't have to keep trawling through the forum trying to remember the name of the thread I posted in :)
