Hip pain when running

Hi all

I have recently gone back to running a little on a treadmill. I am not experienced and cannot run very far so I tend to do intervals - 2 min fast walk, 5 min run for about 30 mins and then build from there if I feel ok. The last 2 occasions I have developed hip pain in one hip. It is on the outside of the hip and feels like an internal severe ache rather than a sharp pain. I consulted Dr Google (as you do) and running weekly website suggested it might be inflammation of the joins and to take it easy for a few days and have anti inflammatory pills which I have done. I haven't run for 7 days now and although I was pleased with my progress and really want to try again I am terrified that I am going to do some damage. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks x

    When I first started running, I had some hip pain as well. I went to the chiropractor and he said my hips were twisted, basically from sitting all day at an office job. After just one or two adjustments, the hip pain stopped! Now I go every month or so just to keep things straight.

    I came across this (pasted at the very bottom) and thought it may be helpful (I'm playing Dr Google too, though!). I haven't experienced this personally, though. Along with rest, maybe it would be good to look into some of the stretches listed below?

    One other thing to think about.. do you have the same pain running outside? I am not a treadmill person and my form is compromised when I try to run on one (that's just me... I'm not saying there's anything wrong w running on treadmills for others). Anyway, maybe it's worth it to see if running on a different surface would help too?

    It may also be worth visiting a running store and getting fitted for shoes. I had some bad issues with plantar fasciitis (foot) in the past (of course not the same type of issue as what you have going on, though). Wearing the proper shoes (size, right amount of cushion, etc) really alleviated the issue entirely for me. I bought my shoes in the running store my first time, since they were kind enough to help me find the right shoes. They were a little on the expensive side ($110), but now I find better deals for the same type of shoes online.

    If it keeps up, if it were me, I'd probably head to the doctor just to be on the safe side.

    Pain on the outside of the hip is most commonly due to greater trochanteric bursitis. The thigh bone juts outward at the base of the neck (connects ball to the femur; site of hip stress fractures); this protrusion is the greater trochanter. A lubricating sac (bursa) overlies the boney protrusion, so that the surrounding muscles do not rub directly on the bone. The top region of the iliotibial (IT) band, known as the tensor fascia lata, is commonly involved in greater trochanteric bursitis.

    Treatment includes stretching and strengthening the IT band, hip abductors and gluteal muscles (see exercises for the IT band and piriformis syndrome). Apply ice to the painful area for 15 minutes three to four times per day. Avoid running on banked surfaces. A cortisone injection may be beneficial. Severe or worsening pain should raise suspicion for a stress fracture.

    I have to have a chiropractic adjustment at least once a month to keep my hips from bothering me. It's made a world of difference for me!

    No need to run if it's causing you discomfort or pain. Walking may burn a little less, but if you can do that, it's fine.

    I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on the Internet, I would not rely on Dr Google to self diagnose. A competent PT should be able to assess the problem and suggest exercises, stretching etc to get you fixed up. Contrary to the glowing testimonials I wouldn't let a chiropractor lay hands on me for all the tea in China......

    Thanks for all your responses. To answer some questions... I haven't had pain running outside before but then I haven't on a treadmill before either tbh. I also read the article from running world and so far the advice has been spot on. I think I will try a very gentle run tonight and if the pain flares up again stick to fast paced walking for a while. Thanks all

    I sprint and ride a bike. Sometimes I have serious hip pain. One of my MFP pals gave me this advice and it worked. First, always incline your treadmill at least .5 or 1. Next, this is key, do this stretch. Sit on a chair and cross your leg (Indian style) and push on your knee, it might pinch but it will feel better.

    Try setting up a video camera behind you at hip level, and look for asymmetry.

    I know that I personally need to spend about a minute at a really low pace (like 2) to get used to the feel of the treadmill before I continue with my workout. I'm not exactly sure why, but this has helped me with my hip issues with this machine. Also, I make sure that I stretch my back out by laying on the floor with my knees bent and my arms down by my side. When I really need a good stretch I slowly pull my knees up to my chest and hold them there for several seconds.

    I have tight hips, and get hip pain running if I don't stretch them out often enough. (I feel them popping)
    I do hip stretches, but the routine the poster above referenced looks really good. I'm going to add these to my regular hip stretches.

    They're amazing. IT band problems and runner's knee be gone. The one thing I add is hip hikes.

    As to OP's problem: actual hip pain is the one thing that gets me to the actual doctor as opposed to Google, MD. So much of what goes on in that area can be referred pain to/from something else, and the things that can go wrong are either incredibly minor or seriously major. (It's never been major for me, luckily). But that's me.

    I think this is what I have (I'm 38), the symptoms are spot on for me. I probably do need to incorporate more stretching into my time so will do this and take is slowly for a while. Thank you
