I am 5'7 about 180 pounds. I have been into fitness the last two years, I do cardio and love to strength train...
I have leg pain, all the time just about. Sometimes its like I have done leg day everyday. Mainly in my quads and hamstrings but my calf muscles hurt too.
I take a week or two off at a time and I swear sometimes it hurts more when I take time off.
Anyone have any tips or ideas?
The pain isn't horrible like I broke or pulled something, its just like a constant irritation and makes going for a walk or run sometimes feel impossible.

Just legs? No where else on the body?

@ninerbuff Mainly my legs but I get horrible tightness & sore in my traps which always seem to make my neck hurt.. Otherwise it seems to be just my legs. I quit doing shoulders about 6 month ago.

If rest doesn't fix it (2-3 weeks) see a medical professional.

I have honestly talked to my doctor but the response I received was that "my body wasn't made for running and to try different exercises." He didn't seem to get that its always like this even if I take time off. I have thought about switching doctors but I wasn't sure if this was common or if anyone else had ideas before I went to the doctor again.

I had calf pain in my right leg, went to a doctor who just brushed it off as a pulled muscle, so I dealt with it ... once it was so bad went to the hospital for fear of blood clot... nothing on the ultrasound... one night I woke up with pain radiating all the way up the leg so I went to after hours where they gave me a steroid packet and sent me on my way....

Almost a year went by with the constant ache and often uncomfortable pain... I stopped working out, I couldn't even sleep that well anymore...then one day I go to get out of bed and my entire back ceases up on me... I could not make my body move... had to be carried out of my own home to the hospital... one CT and MRI later it turns out is was sciatica ... it had caused so much nerve damage and scar tissue I had to have surgery on my L4 and L5 ... I did not want surgery and went two different orthopedic specialists from two different practices as well as a neurosurgeon to see if I could just do some physical therapy and injections... they all said it was far beyond that point seeing as I couldn't even walk without a walker (I had to drag my right leg it wouldn't bend or anything and the x-rays showed by bodies attempt to completely immobilize me)...

I do not meant to scare you I am just saying if you know something is not right do not let doctors blow you off find the issue... for some reason it never occurred to any medical personal I saw before my back ceased up that it was my back and not my calf....

I would see a chiropractor or RMT and discuss this in more detail with them.

Hello Samz10, I know your pain! I and my brother have the same thing, constant leg pain. We use an old remedy that is if you dont have dietetics pain like neuropathy. If you drink tonic water it has Quinine in it, it will stop the pain, if you wake in the night with pain just drink a very small cup. In 10 to 20 minutes the pain will stop and you will go back to sleep. I do this often. Older doctors know of this remedy and it is the quinine in it that works. I get the diet tonic and it taste fine. Try it out.

^ That's a good start. Within your exercise, include what you do for mobility / flexibility. Be detailed with the exercise portion. Exercises used, sets, reps, etc.

Alright, Normally work day is a desk job so I sit for periods of time. I normally work out 3 times a week on average, I shoot for 5.
Mondays are normally chest day. I do a warm up jog before I start any lifting day: chest press, 4 sets at increasing weights (I lift with a progressive weight for all exercises), pushups, cable pull downs and Abs to finish.
On Tuesdays I normally just do cardio, long walks or a walk/ jog combo.
Weds is legs.. Varies week to week. Squats 4 sets, stiff legged dead lifts 3-4 sets, lunges or leg press.
    Thursday is cardio
Friday is arms but mainly abs.

I know I need to stretch more.

What is Quinine? Where do you buy it?

She said drink tonic water. Its in the tonic water but read the ingredients list to be sure the one you choose is the right one. If you are going to do that, you still need a diagnosis. You need to find out what is actually causing the pain.

I would recommend you see a physiotherapist or a sports doctor. Not all physios are the same so you might need to ask around to find a suitable person for you.

Anyway i would be sure to get a diagnosis and i would stop doing the leg work until you know what's going on. You could be making the problem worse.

And perhaps you should look up sciatica yourself as well. If its sciatica, then the weight work is probably not helping.

Foam rolling and stretching helps lots of things. If you are looking for something else to try (too much pain to work out normally), do some yoga instead. If your pain improves with yoga, then stretching is definitely what you needed.

Perhaps get a deep tissue massage. If this helped the pain, then foam rolling on a normal basis will help you.

Definitely invest in a foam roller! The first time using it will probably be fairly painful...but stick with it, it does help! Also, you pack a lot of lower body work into 4-5 days straight. It could help to break it up to 2-days on, 1-day off, repeat, instead of 4-5 days straight. Do you have anyone monitoring your form or weight increases? If you're doing too much weight, increasing too fast, or using poor form, that can cause pain.

I'd also try an ice bath after a long/intense day. I take one after any run >10 miles and it helps knock out any inflammation and pain. I just put like 4 inches of water in the tub and add a couple bowls of ice...try and tolerate it for 5-10 minutes at first. Not fun, but really does help.

I'd probably still make an appointment with a doctor who specializes in sports medicine and is active themselves. They're more used to fielding questions and finding an answer for active people...whereas sometimes a regular doctor doesn't have the extra training and experience to really dial down on problems. Chronic pain isn't something I'd ignore without knowing why it's happening...so it's better to be safe than sorry.

    Good luck!!

The only thing I saw is the "Wed is legs... varies week to week" comment. What is your variation? It is possible that you have too much variation and you're not allowing your body to adapt. Your body MUST adapt to get stronger, all that crap about "muscle confusion" and constant variability is crap. If you have noticeable variation week-to-week that could be why your muscles are always sore. I would need more detail to really say one way or another.

I have a desk job as well and I get pain in my back and left hip if I get lazy with my mobility work. Get into some daily mobility work, whether it's doing a YouTube video, buying a Yoga video, a structured stretching program, going to a Yoga class; just do something to improve your mobility. If you do that religiously for a couple weeks and you're still sore all the time, then perhaps a doctor's visit is warranted.

^ This. I'd start with a general physician, or, preferably, an internist, to rule out vascular and other causes of leg pain.

By the way, i'd switch to a full-body workout done 3x a week. It's less stressful to the body. There's rarely a valid reason to do a 3 part bro-split, unless one is an advanced bodybuilder.

This is actually not safe, I looked it up and the only illness Quinine is approved for is malaria. It is easy to cause toxicity, very nasty stuff. Google it.

That being said, i feel your pain OP, literally. I have had constant calf pain for three months now with no diagnosis. Been to see the doctors, been to PT. Rest doesn't help. Activity doesn't help. Stretching/strengthening doesn't help. Clean MRI, Xray and ultrasound. Bloodwork normal with the exception of low vit D. Right now I am seeing a chiropractor (my ortho referred me). I've gone twice so far, and received ART (active release therapy). It has helped a bit. It's like a deep tissue massage on steroids. For about two days after I feel (almost) normal, although there's no running or other high impact activity going on. I'm hoping that continued treatments will provide longer lasting results/resolution of symptoms. So far it's the only thing that's provided even a bit of relief.

The pain isn't horrible like I broke or pulled something, its just like a constant irritation and makes going for a walk or run sometimes feel impossible.

Go to a doctor who will refer you to a Sports Doctor.

You might also opt to see a chiropractor or physiotherapist, but make sure that they are into sports.

If this has been going on for 2 years, you need to see someone.

Agreed. You need to get full physical and an assessment done of how you're moving from a muscoskektal perspective. It could be something relatively straightforward like a muscle imbalance or needing custom orthotics to correct your gait.

Hey OP, I'm bumping because I'm curious how things are going for you. I did 7 visits with my chiro but it didn't fix my problem, so now I'm thinking I'm going to ask my ortho for a vascular doc referral. Your symptoms sounded pretty similar to mine.
