Hi,

I'm looking at starting strength training for the 1st time and have no idea how or where to start. Looking at joining the gym but before I spend money I haven't really got want to start at home.

I'm a stay at home mum to a 3year old boy

Any help would be fantastic, thanks.

A good bodyweight program is You Are Your Own Gym. It's a book you can get on Amazon, I believe. There is also New Rules of Lifting for Women, which has a lot of great information for beginners.

If you decide to join a gym:

If you have no equipment at home, start with body weight or invest in some adjustable Dumbbells or kettle bells. Fitnessblender.com has some good programs. I am running Stong a Curves right now. I went back to the beginner program. And will do the advanced when I finished. I don't have all the necessary equipment at home, so I improvise. However, the book does have a body weight only program, so that could be a place to start, the. Perhaps follow it up by investing in equipment or a gym membership. Lots of people like New Rules, Stwrting Strength and Strong Lifts. I've never run them, but they seem like good, basic programs, and I've run similar programs, though New Rules is maybe a tad less simple.

Other bodyweight programs that require little to no equipment are Convict conditioning and the free beginners bodyweight routine on Nerdfitness. If you are willing to invest, a suspension trainer like a TRX is also an option.
