Hi everyone! I'm newer here and I was wondering what you thought of the exercise data base??? Do you think it's pretty accurate? I just bought the Tae Bo Cardio DVD ( which I enjoy, but it's hard) lol and I found Tae Bo in the data base. I put in my 35min and according to it I burned just over 800 CALORIES! Pretty exciting, but could this be true???

if your going to eat back those calories i suggest getting a heart rate monitor so you can be accurate but for general logging purposes it just depends some things its over and some things its under

I do tae bo---almost daily and when i log 38 minutes i get around 600 calories burned.
  • I don't think the exercise database is close to being accurate for the majority of exercises in it.

I find that MFP overestimates calories burned on somethings and underestimates on others. I really depends on age, gender, weight, height, fitness level...ect

A HRM would give you the best estimate.

Oh ok...but If 2 people who weigh differently, the heavier person would burn more, right? Is that how that works?

Thanx everyone! Maybe I'll research this a little more... But I don't plan on eating my 'exercise' calories. Also, I don't undertsand that. Why eat your exercise calories? Wouldn't you just maintain your weight???

Iso, in your opinion, how would you figure this out?

Honestly? Purchase an HRM so you can input your own personal stats which MFP doesn't go by on the exercise site here.

Age, weight, male/female it all makes a huge difference in what we burn. Some that don't have one take 1/2 of what MFP gives them and go with that. It's a temporary fix until you get to purchase a Heart Rate Monitor, and I have no real clue how accurate it is. Oh and when you decide to purchase one there are lots and lots of threads with that topic. You can do a search for Polar brand and many other brands will come up that folks have given their feedback on what they feel has worked best for them.

There are also many many GREAT threads on the importance of learning the 'why of eating back at least SOME of your workout cals'.

The reason it works is when you join MFP you make a choice in how many lbs. you'd like to lose per week and MFP sets a deficit for you so you're already in a deficit from the getgo. If you're looking to lose 2 lbs. per week then you're in a deficit of 1000 cals.

If MFP tells you to eat 1600 cals (or whatever cals it gives you personally) and you workout and burn 900 on a big time workout day, that will only leave your body with 700 cals to fuel itself. Does that make a bit more sense now?

If the site wasn't set up with a deficit, then no eating back workout calories would not be something necessary.

It's important we keep our bodies fueled for strength and good health.

Hope something above helps you in some way.

Typically yes. It also could depend on how fit the heavier person is. As we get more fit we tend to have to workout harder to burn the same amount of cals it used to take us far less time to burn when we were less fit.:flowerforyou:

yeah i found that its generally pretty inaccurate. i suppose buying a HRM is the best way, but i dont have one either. i google and find several different references and try to find a pattern. usually livestrong.com is good. they have some formulas to determine caloric burn for certain exercises, such as elliptical trainers.

If you are accurately logging your food and exercise you can eat some or all of your exercise calories and should still lose weight.

MFP sets you up with a calorie deficit per day (can be as much as 1000 cals) so you will lose weight.
When you log your exercise, MFP adds extra calories for you to eat so that your deficit stays at 1000 (or whatever your number is). So, you can eat more and still lose weight, it works really well for lots of people!
If you arent't sure about the taeboe numbers, then you could google "how many calories do i burn doing tae boe) and you will find lots of other sites that give you an estimate. This will give you a guide to how many calories to enter.

Bear in mind that all these numbers will be estimates (just like the food you log) but if you put them in as accuarately as you can and eat what MFP suggests, it is most likely you will lose weight steadily. I do!
