i started Atkins on Monday, lost 4.5 lbs as of Thursday. Today I am 5 lbs heavier than yesterday, but have changed nothing in my diet. I am using ketostix and am now in moderate ketosis. I do use some Atkins bars/shakes as well as meat, fish, cheese, eggs and drink lots of water. Thoughts?

    You can be ketogenic and maintain or gain. 5 lbs is a large change - are your scales reliable and do you weigh under the same conditions each time.

    You didn't tell us whether you were counting your calories or not? That's the 100% most important factor in losing weight; calories in < calories out (CICO).

    You need to eat less. Keto is not a magic diet.

    Also the other times I've done low carb I've eaten way more calories. Could it be the sugar alcohols in the Atkins products?

    Unless you have a medical condition, like epilepsy, you do not need to be on a ketogenic diet. If you really like to eat that way, then sure, go for it, but it isn't exempt from the first law of thermodynamics. If you consume more energy (food) than you expend, your body will store the excess energy as fat. Energy cannot be created or destroyed. That's just how it works, period.

    Open your diary so we can see your logging;
    • Are you using an electric food scale?
    • Are you weighing your foods accurately? i.e. using grams instead of cups
    • How are you obtaining your calorie burns? MFP, HRM or machines?

    Some people don't get on well with the sugar alcohols. You don't need them so save the money and see what the weight does.

    You can not base the effectiveness of a weight loss plan in 4-5 days. Your fluctuations are mostly water. You should be able to lose fat at 1500 calories, if you are still not losing after a few weeks, you are most likely underestimating the number of calories you are eating.

    5 Lbs in a day is either water weight and/or waste or your scales are jacked...it's mathematically impossible to put on 5 Lbs of actual fat in a day.

    i can easily fluctuate 1-5 Lbs up or down day to day...you need to look at trends over time...4-5 days is jack.

    My weight fluctuates a lot while in ketosis. It goes up or down by a pound or two in one day, and that is eating at a deficit like you are. It evens out in the end. As long as you keep eating a deficit, the overall trend will be downward.

    Feel free to check my dairy's weight report and you'll see what I mean.

    Then you were more active, or you just think you were eating more. No matter what type of diet you choose, your must eat less calories than you burn to lose weight. It's science.

    She’s only been on the diet for five days. It’s much too soon to know whether she needs to change her calorie intake.

    Missed that part. :) That is too soon to tell anything at all.

    A swing of that magnitude sounds suspiciously like a "broke ketosis, refilled glycogen" cycle, which comes with a crap ton of water.
